Nicholas Brendon 54 Years, RIP

I wish I felt worse than I do about this, but his activities since BtVS ended really complicate his legacy for me. :|

He was the GoH at a local con I attended, and for a long time that woud have been really exciting to me, but at that point enough of his personal life had become public record that I kept my distance. IIRC not long after that he had another incident, which just seemed to validate my decision to keep my distance.

I'm willing to grant that he clearly had some personal demons (no pun intended), but he also seems to have made some pretty questionable choices along the way.

So, as I said, I wish I felt more sad about this. :|

Drink and drug addiction can degrade the human brain's governing ability (explaining, not excusing, his misconduct escalating as his career prematurely went on the wane).

He repeatedly assaulted his girlfriend, held a knife to her throat and subjected her to emotional abuse. Nicholas Brendon was a piece of shit and suffering from childhood trauma is no excuse for inflicting trauma on others good riddance, I say.

Time and place, dude. This is a memorial thread.
Yes, let's all gush about what a beautiful soul he was and ignore the harsh truth that he was a problematic individual who treated women very badly. I grew up with a father who behaved very similarly to Brendon and the terror that men like that inflict lasts a life time. So no, I'm not going to have any sympathy for this man and will not mourn his passing.

Then it's better to say nothing.

Praising this man in death invalidates everything he did to his victims and it disrespects the trauma they are now living with. A man who beats women is not deserving of being memorialised. It's despicable to think that he should be. Spare me your soapboxing.
