Project Hail Mary | Ryan Gosling (March 20, 2026)

I just got back from seeing it. That was visually stunning, and I got emotional over a Rock. Very good movie and worthy of the level of Sci Fi that films like The Martian and Arrival gave to us.

I concur with all your points!

I also really liked the score / music choices used - and as a New Zealander, I was both surprised and blown away when hearing: ‘Po Atarau – Now Is The Hour’ - as sung by St Joseph’s Maori Girls College - which is a beautiful and moving piece of music.

Also great hearing ‘Winds of Change’ by the Scorpions.

I saw the movie yesterday. I loved it. I think the 4 things that stood out the most to me were:

1) It faithfully adapts the book. The main plot, flashback sequences, and heart of the book are all there.
2) The friendship between Rocky and Grace is very well done. It will make you laugh and cry. I legitimately cried in the scene where
Grace finally tells Rocky that he cannot go home and he has made peace about dying. Rocky then says he will give Grace some of his fuel to get home and says "Rocky save Grace". Grace tears up at the prospect of going home.
3) It is a stunningly beautiful movie, especially some of the space scenes. There is one scene in particular that made me tear up just with the sheer beauty.
when Grace does his space walk to collect astrophage in the Tau Ceti system and he is inside the Petrova line. You see him bathed in red with the astrophage like fire flies all around him. It is incredible.
4) The score really heightens the emotional impact of the scenes.

Loved the movie. Why does the Hail Mary have solar panels?

I'm trying to get over my "The book is so much better" phase - and it is - and get into the "This movie is incredible" phase. And it is.

My favorite review:
Gosling dominates the screen for well over 2 hours just for Sandra Hüller to steal the whole thing with one karaoke number.[/URL]

A puppet of a rock!

To not use astrophage for power while inside the solar system and the Tau Ceti system?

Better question would be, why not? The ship would need to get its power from something, and it might as well be solar power, as it's the most efficient way of generating power and conserving it, especially over a long distance.

Does it differ much from the book?

The movie sticks very closely to the book imo. The movie starts the same as the book, uses the same flashback format to fill in the backstory, follows the same plot arc, emotional beats, and has the same ending as the book. The movie does have some minor plot tweaks but they don't change the overall story.

I think the main difference between the book and the movie is that the movie shortens some of the science scenes. The book goes into more detail about the science and how Grace figures things out. Also, the movie does skip some of the "side plots" in the flashbacks on Earth in the interest of time.

Given the power stored in (and used from) astrophage that would be almost like putting solar panels on the Enterprise. Given the power it used to get from Sol to Tau Ceti the power used to run the ship would be trivial.

I think they're just there to look "spacy".

Given what we see then go through around Adrian, they have to be pretty tough. Under normal operations they have to withstand 1.5g of acceleration and whatever torque happens when the centrifuge mode is in use.

I think the biggest change is that
Grace is a little dumber and much less well trained. Yet he figures our Rocky's sonar a lot faster.

But it was surprisingly faithful. There were a few moments that I was surprised made it into the movie. Nothing big. Just as they went by I thought "Wow. They included that."

Oh and
Ilyukhina only wants a "little" heroin. In the book she flat out says "Heroin". She's been good her whole life so why not go out with a bang?

i need to go back and read the comments from pages 2-6, but really briefly -- this was an AWESOME movie, and felt really fresh and original and generally speaking, familly friendly.

Loved it, but hope that Mario Galaxy doesn't hurt the income.... This deserves to be in the top 10 for both income and awards

Right, but I think it makes sense given it's supposed to be humanity's first trip out of the solar system. They would want to have backup systems just in case given the long-range of travel and not knowing what to expect.

I'm feeling really jealous right now for the people experiencing the story through the movie for the first time. Everyone who hasn't already read the book is in for a serious treat. :) When I was reading it, I felt like it was one of the freshest ideas in a sci-fi novel in perhaps decades, and I'm glad to hear it comes through via the movie.

I know not everyone likes The View, but they did a really great interview with Ryan Gosling and the Filmmakers. The joy they had in making this movie really shines through.
