Project Hail Mary | Ryan Gosling (March 20, 2026)

Just watched this today. Loved it. Definitely a future classic.

I just rewatched it a month or so ago.

It is still fantastic.
I thought Rocky was particularly reminiscent of the way the aliens were depicted in Story of My Life, particularly the eating scene.

I enjoyed the hell out of it and loved the character growth for Grace and fell madly in love with Rocky.

My hubby picked apart the science that bothered him later. Killjoy. :p

The science thing I didn't quite get was how we can tell other stars are being depleted as well. If the discovery only happened recently and it only takes a few decades to cause a disastrous effect on the world--then how can humans see the same thing happening in all the other systems except one if the infection happened from a single incident? Wouldn't they only be able to determine that stars closer to the astrophage star are having this problem?

the rate of dimming would probably be similar in all of them, so observing for a little while should give you the answer.

Read the book several years ago and LOVED it! One of the best novels I've read recently. I didn't want it to end.

Saw the movie this weekend and it was also fantastic! I felt it stayed true to the novel. Obviously, it had to trim some content but retained the book's heart.

Like I said before, I was surprised the first trailer revealed Rocky but turns out there was a heavy debate about whether or not to show him, according to Andy Weir (who is a producer on the film):

“It's really more a marketing decision by Amazon MGM, but the idea was no one's going to walk into that theater and not know about Rocky,” Weir said. “This is not a Darth Vader is Luke's father kind of situation. This is a core, central element of the plot that everybody's going to be talking about and that everybody who's read the book already knows about.”

.
“All trailers are designed to put butts in seats, and we want those butts in those seats,” Weir says. “We want people to go now I want to know what's going on.”

I figured it was a marketing decision but Weir raises a good point that Rocky's role is a core element of the novel so there isn't much point in holding him back.
Even though they revealed Rocky, I was glad that it didn't reveal the other big twist:
About Grace's decision on launching with the ship.

The astrophage did not arrive at all the star systems at the same time as Sol. It would have taken different times to travel to the other star systems. Some of the other systems might have been contaminated years before Sol so there was time for the light from those stars to arrive to us. And if observe the same dimming effect then we know those stars were affected too.The bottom line is that we observed the same dimming effect in a whole cluster of nearby stars except one. So it peaked our curiosity.

Regarding the Rocky reveal in advertising.. i think it totally HELPS the movie get the attention it deserves... This movie, overall, is pretty family friendly.

Another Ryan Gosling movie, Barbie, had its success fueled by both adults themselves, but also their desire to bring their kids, even though a couple things might have been disappointing for those parents.

With Project Hail Mary, i don't think parents will have any regrets taking their families, especially during Spring Break. Sure, the surprise worked for the book, but i think the reveal was better for the movie.
