How big are the changes that are coming?

I was wondering what the future of Star Trek would be with Paramount, as I see that strange new worlds is being wrapped up early – to my regret – and what I was told is that Paramount is moving away from the focus on TV series and the close ties to the considerable backstory of Star Trek, and is moving Star Trek instead towards movies, and to a closer kinship with the Marvel brand. Projects that had been in the works have been abandoned. The only TV series still being fostered is Starfleet Academy. How accurate do you suppose this picture is? I don't like the idea of losing the TV series, however much one might like or dislike any given title, and I really don't like bringing Star Trek more in line with Marvel.

Projects that had been in the works have been abandoned.

There have been no ‘projects in the works’ other than SFA and the multitude of announcements for films that Paramount had no actual intention of ever making. All other rumors for such things like Legacy, Year One, United, Tawny Newsome’s pet project, the Janeway show etc. etc. were either just pitches CBS/Paramount chose not to greenlight, wishful thinking from directors struggling to keep a job, or downright falsehoods from information taken out of context.

The bottom line is that there has been a regime change, and one of two current projects from the old regime has been canceled, and the other project’s current future is unknown, while the only thing ‘officially’ on the horizon is yet another hollow promise of a feature film.

Oh, and Star Trek Scouts.

Don't we have multiple discussions on the same basic subject already?

The answer to the OP's question is, we don't know. There are a lot of people saying things. The vast majority of them don't know, either.

Thanks, Dukhat. Disappointing. I suppose we just wait a few years and see if someone else buys the franchise and decides to revive it.

Skydance isn’t going to sell the Star Trek IP to someone else. If anything, they will return to feature films à la the 2009 Abrams movie.
Bah. It’s the series I like. And the idea of making it more like Marvel movies is a real turn off for me. Oh well, I've got the old ones to watch.

IMO, intentions that the Ellisons announced prior to the acquistion of Warners are up in the air.

They have a much bigger meal to digest now, than when they only had Paramount - and WB frankly has a lot more big franchises to service that may require big investments of money and effort to manage and produce properly.

WB is where their profits are going to be. Star Trek is a middling franchise - if that - which needs to be rethought. Even Mission Impossible projects will have priority.

I'm inclined to think the next Star Trek project probably won't be as diverse as either Discovery or Starfleet Academy, but will still feature women and a few people of color in supporting roles (like in TOS, really). I think we're also going to start seeing much smaller casts, with the focus on two or three main characters with the rest being more or less day players. We may see a major emphasis of Starfleet as mainly a peacekeeping force, with exploration as a coincidence.

I don't expect any major changes to be honest. They'll probably try to get a cinematic reboot up and running, most likely based on TOS, maaaaybe TNG because that too is pretty well known.

The future of Star Trek will be white and straight.
So it's going to be business as usual because up until Discovery Star Trek was good at pretending to be inclusive while other shows airing at the same time were much better in that regard.

The future of Star Trek will be white and straight.

It's far worse than movies versus television, it's Trek's very identity as an inclusive world that is under threat with Paramount's new owners and America's path.

most likely since right wing trumpers now own paramount

they most likely will get that tough guy who created the yellowstone universe to make this new version of the star trek universe

I'll be the first to be against MAGA Trek if it goes that way. I won't even support ENT Season 3, which I call Bush Trek.

But... I actually think it won't come to that. Political Alert: I expect the Republicans to get wiped out in the Midterms and then to lose in 2028. They're doing a spectacular job of messing things up right now. So, I think the Trump Regime will either be out of the way or almost out of the way by the time Star Trek gets going again. It'll be the beginning of the GOP wanting to distance themselves from that "person" if only for the sake of their political survival if nothing else.

So, I don't expect we'll actually get MAGA Trek.
