A movie could be interesting. They could just start off with the nuclear war as an unexplained background (a movie is no place to start getting into the whole conspiracy thing) and launch directly into an incipient civil war like they left things off. The audience doesn't have to know all the background, they just need to know that 1) a lot of the country was nuked and 2) the country has split into armed camps as a result.
This story would still work a lot better as a TV series, but I'll take what I can get.

I know there are fans and all that good stuff, but no one should be complaining about CBS if they give up on this project like fans did when Fox canceled Firefly. It seems to me that CBS has gone above and beyond to save this show and I applaud thier efforts for it. I'm not a fan of the show, but it seems like this network is really dedicated to it which is a bit strange.
^Unfortunately, a lot of the fans need an enemy. When it first got canceled it was because "Neilson doesn't count everybody." When it got canceled this latest time, it's because, "CBS screwed us with a bad time slot, little warning, a piss-poor lead in, and never wanted the thing to succeed!!!"
Personally, I'm really excited about any developments that come. I'm hoping for more seasons, but I will be happy with a movie, or a series of movies. Of course, if worse came to worse, I thought season two was a good wrap up (or at least better than what we got last time! :P )

See, CBS is realizing the outcry must mean something and they're trying to figure out where the $ is buried. So they are exploring possible ideas because they figure if a show can generate this much fuss there is money to be had if they can only find it. And the demographics of the show are an advertiser's dream-but the total #s weren't. Nevertheless, the $ is there...somewhere.
That would be too logical an interpretation. This is a major network we're talking about, here.

My thoughts exactly. Jericho is one of favorite shows. CBS gave the show another chance, the viewer numbers just aren't good enough for them.
^ But still I feel there is an audience there, that would keep other networks happy. I wish more cancelled shows would jump ships, I don't understand why so many good shows go to waste.
Surly buying a show from another network is cheaper than making a brand new one from the beginning, eg- sets for one.

Part of the reason would likely be whether or not the original network would be willing to give up the rights to the show. There could, of course, be any number of other situations, such as if being on a new network would require relocation for the actors.
The simple answer is that most networks like to own their shows because they get to make money from them even if they're not initially profitable.

Not necessarily. Salary casts traditionally tend to increase over time as a series goes along. Any money you're saving on set design will most likely be absorbed by these wage costs.
Fox wasn't being smart when they released "Firefly" on DVD and people bought it in droves. I think the success of that series on DVD caught a lot of people by surprise, including the network. That's the only reason why Warner Bros. approached Joss Whedon about making a movie.
The same can be said of "Family Guy". Fox cancelled the show, but when the series was released on DVD it sold like crazy. Then the reruns popped up on Adult Swim and ratings went up. Fox was surprised. They realized the mistake they'd made, and since the show was animated, it wasn't difficult to bring it back.
"Jericho" has been handled much better by CBS. The network knows that there's a passionate fanbase out there. They threw them a bone with season 2 but the ratings just weren't there. I don't know how well the DVDs are selling. At this point, I think the fans should just be really happy that CBS is willing to explore more options as opposed to just canceling the show - again - and moving on.

With a show like this, it is tough to bring in new fans in the second season, because there are alot of people out there who would not buy DVD sets at all, let alone buy them sight-unseen in order to get 'caught up' on a show in preparation for a 7-episode season 2.
And stepping in at the beginning of season 2 really wasn't a viable option. The only reason to care about these characters is because of what they went through in season 1.
It is unfortunate that this show didn't get the base it needed 18 months ago, because it is a great show. Who knows who is to blame for that? Or maybe no one is to blame. Maybe alot of people just didn't want to watch a show about civil war in the U.S. given our real-life war and the existing deep political divisions in the country.

The film is based on Firefly, a television series cancelled by Fox television in December 2002, after 11 of its 14 produced episodes had aired. When attempts to have another network acquire the show failed, creator Joss Whedon attempted to sell it as a film. Through a business connection, he was introduced to Mary Parent with Universal Pictures, who immediately signed on after watching the episodes on DVD
I'm glad to see that there is still some hope for the show.
