Early Criticism: What’s Unfounded and What Isn’t

Sulu was revealed to be gay in Beyond which was I believe 11 years after Takei came out. Takei hated that they made Sulu gay just because he is as I recall.
Specifically, Takei's issue was that he has always considered Sulu to be heterosexual, and he has stated that in public. I for one remember an interview done with Takei shortly after he publicly came out where the interviewer asked his thoughts regarding Sulu's sexuality, and Takei made it clear that even after he accepted he was gay himself he still considered Sulu to be straight. Because of that, he felt the decision to make Sulu gay in Beyond was ignoring his wishes.

All the complaining online about "OMG HOW CAN A KLINGON BE GAY!?" reminds me of the flame wars in the 90's on Usenet Star Trek groups because "Voyager" had a black Vulcan!! And, "HOW CAN A VULCAN BE *BLACK*!?" And

I also remember fan debates in the 80's because "THEY SHOULD HAVE CURED BALDNESS BY THE 24TH CENTURY!!" - Now the debates and arguments are over a Gay Klingon and a cadet in a wheelchair and a deaf Betazoid*!

*(BTW, if his auditory cortex was blown out, that would probably explain why he can't "hear voices" in his head either - because the auditory cortex is likely involved in translating psychic wavelengths/broadcasts/energies/whatever INTO an audible "voice" in a Betazoid's head. I just wish they had EXPLAINED that...AND had gotten the eyes right (or explained away THAT too!)

The irony of course being we find out in Voyager that they had cured baldness by the 24th century.

Funnily enough it doesn't, because they established in TNG that unlike humans Betazoid brains have the ability to heal brain damage.
