Early Criticism: What’s Unfounded and What Isn’t

"over the past few weeks since this show premiered, I’ve received countless messages from LGBTQ+ people around the world… people who feel seen, validated"

I'm not sure this statement applies in current times. Maybe it did 20 years ago when these characters were still somewhat rare or when they were still portrayed as caricatures. But if you look at any show that has aired in the past, say, 10 years...is there one without at least one gay character?
It's the norm now.

So you're accusing Karim Diane of being a liar?

Star Trek is behind the times? Stop the fucking presses.

yup, was expecting this....

the idea of being seen and validated, I think is woven into society at this point. There will be a small minority that refuse to, always, but from a general perspective...

Jay-Den is one of the best things about SFA. Great outsider character.

Sadly I also think it is somewhat fortunate for him that he's wearing a thick face-mask - that way the hate is targeted to the character, less so to the actor & his face himself.

It depends if the viewers were watching that one. Star Trek has a very different place in culture.

in the JJ Abrams reboot, Sulu was gay, I wonder if this was influenced by George Takei, I think he "came out" only a short time before that movie released, but can't be certain of the timing. interesting little tidbit.

Sulu was revealed to be gay in Beyond which was I believe 11 years after Takei came out. Takei hated that they made Sulu gay just because he is as I recall.

Yes. They even asked Takei for his blessing in advance - but he declined (he said he always played Sulu "straight") - and then they did it anyway.

It was pretty shameless corporate PR move to claim Trek's first gay character for themselves, before DIS launched one year later & introduced Stamets (a character that was actually created as gay from the beginning)

Why does it feel like as soon as I block one hater video channel on YT, YT suggests another. I've watched a few clips of these channels [...]
Well, there's your problem. If you watch the videos of the hater channels, YouTube's algorithm doesn't care that you hate it until you stop watching and start blocking.

You can also remove videos from your YouTube history so that they no longer influence your suggestions.

Though I still had to spend a while blocking grifters from my feed. I've got an add on called BlockTube that lets me block them from search results too.

That's interesting, has he said why it bothered him?
And sadly if he was traditional Klingon the complaints would be about the lack of diversity in Klingon culture.
not if he was like the most badass Klingon ever: Gowron
