News Starfleet Academy Nielsen Ratings

I long for the day that I can speak at length of my criticisms of shows like DISCO without having to deal with the fact that so much of the hatred of it was sexism, racism, and homophobia. The nature of the hatred on the internet is so manufactured that real discussion is practically impossible. Same with Starfleet Academy.

In the future we'll be able to talk about the groundbreaking place of DISCO for gay marriage, trans, and nonbinary characters.

But we'll also be able to say that a lot of really dumb worldbuilding decisions were made.

And the fans can embrace that in peace.

You'd be surprised in Voyager's case. There was that thing from Netflix a while back that showed that Voyager was dominating the top ten viewed Star Trek episodes (notably including Time and Again, which perhaps suggests more people started Voyager and stuck with it til its third episode than the other series).

Also, I don't know of I can prove this (maybe someone else can back me up) but I feel like Voyager does better with new/younger viewers than TNG or DS9 do; I'm guessing the new owners had some reason to believe this hence the oddly disproportionate focus on Voyager callbacks in their new shows aimed at child-to-teen audiences like PRO and SFA.

My niece liked it better than the other non-TOS shows FWIW, she found TNG extremely dull. I like TNG but if you watch it with someone who isn't already a fan and wasn't around when it was on, you do have to spend half the series saying "I promise it's not always this boring".
I would love a breakdown of the viewing data. It would be interesting what seasons and episodes get watched the most.

Personally I don't think it really did anything for those things, let alone groundbreaking. It came off more like pandering to get views. Other shows did a much better job at it, and added value to the discourse.

I agree with the hatred, but It really didn't do anything to harm the show. All it did was make some youtubers a good amount of money.

Be nice to share views without name-calling or insults or jabs about the intelligence of people

Voyager is incredibly popular in Europe.
It's still getting video games, Seven is as much an icon as Xena, and represents Star Trek like Kirk, Spock, Picard and Data (no DS9, ENT or nuTrek character is individually as popular as these).

It's a bit like David Hasselhoff. Janeway faces a lot less sexism here, Chakotay didn't offend as a "fake native" character that much, and cringe cartoon characters like Neelix are much more tolerated in our media (there's just so much worse...)
These shows have no cultural foot print what so ever.

By the time Discovery got to season 5 it was so irrelevant that it only had 21 professional reviews on RT.
Yeah that's the sad truth.
The only character I can see persisting after the current run had ended would be Anson Mount as Christopher Pike.
The character was already popular before, but Anson completely took over the role, and essentially got a whole show around him (which smartly is an ensemble show - but wouldn't exist without DIS season 2's version of him).

SNW is the only nuTrek show (together with the cartoon) that, despite starting with less viewers than DIS, I can see getting a long-term fan following.
Ironically because of the "old school", traditional episodic approach. There's just enough there to come back to every week.

And with 90s Trek now becoming really, really old, SNW is going to be the best way to introduce the "Trek format" to a new, younger crowd.

Whether it did on other shows better or not, it was the first in a lot of places for Star Trek.

A surprisingly fun game given what I've played of it so far.

like TOS Voyager had more of the adventure element than TNG did. TNG was quite philosophical in retrospect but often lacked the Adventure element, save for a few episodes

"Wagon To the Stars" - is how Gene pitched TOS and Voyager , and by its nature, fit that paradigm.

Indeed. As a kid it took me quite some time getting warm with TNG - went much faster with VOY or TOS - I really learned to appreciate TNG later on when I was older (but then so, so much).

I'd say TNG is the most "adult" of all the Trek shows. Not for sex & violence. But because it mostly engages with you on an intellectual level, not an emotional one. Which makes it somewhat hard to "get into" it in the first place.

He pitched it as “Wagon Train” to the Stars. “Wagon Train” being a popular tv show ( in a then popular genre) about a wagon train and the various people ( some regulars and others guest stars) who made up its complement. TOS, TNG and VOY all fit the pitch. DS9 was more akin to “Gunsmoke” with the station being Dodge City. Though some have compared it to “The Rifleman.”

That's interesting. IMO, neither TNG nor Voyager had great first seasons. TNG was way too elitist and preachy at the beginning (too many put downs on late 20th century including the cringy "costumes like that" remark in the pilot) and Voyager that first year just seemed like TNG in the delta quadrant , but with a more likeable Captain. Rewatching now , I enjoy Voyager far more than I did when it was live and I can see how a younger viewer would latch on to it more than the other series.

I just wish at some point , if the cost of doing so becomes economically viable, that Voyager and DS9 get a proper remaster because they could really use one.

I highly doubt anyone will care about SNW in the future. It's Star Trek The Force Awakens: overly derivative which is why people like it initially, but also the reason it will fade. The writing is mediocre at best. No classic episodes.

Actually, it's brilliant. Better than most of the 1979-2005 Trek era.

I'm sure they will "age" just fine. I'm unsure why they wouldn't.

Idk man. After almost 9 years I still dislike most stuff from season 1-4 of Disco. I never disliked previous Trek like that before and never had to a timeframe to appreciate it later because I liked them well enough in the beginning. Generally speaking. All the shows have had their bad episodes of course. I will say this though. As bad as SFA is ...I just may be able to stomach Disco 1-4 a little more. 😂 But tbh I'm at the age where rewatching stuff really is not in my best interests unless it's REALLY good.

Why does this matter?

Why are we looking in to the future and imaging future problems? Does future people's responses impact viewing now? Do we sit down to watch shows and go "well, I can't enjoy this because future people don't enjoy it?"

If so, that is the most anxiety ridden way to engage with media I've read and find it actively concerning.
