If Paramount+ Put You in Charge Of Trek, Where Would You Take It?

Since were doing this again, I'll dust off my 24th Century reboot/remix.

Star Trek: New Frontiers

An epic multi-POV, arc-based series in the mode of Game of Thrones.

In the aftermath of the Federation-Cardassian Wars, the United Federation of Planets has entered in an alliance with Bajor, a planet in a sector of space formerly controlled by the Cardassian Union. With the Federation’s aid, Bajor is attempting to recover from decades of systematic oppression and exploitation by the Cardassians. The area beyond the Bajor Sector remains largely unexplored and the UFP’s Starfleet has assigned three ships to explore and defend the region and has set up a Starbase to coordinate activity. Soon after Starfleet arrived, a stable wormhole was discovered in the Bajor system’s Deniros Asteroid Belt. The wormhole is home to the enigmatic nonlinear beings called The Prophets by the Bajorans and central to their religion. It also leads to the Gamma Quadrant. An unstable subspace rift, located in the Badlands near the Bajoran-Cardassian border leads to the Delta Quadrant and elsewhere has also been discovered. These have elevated Bajor’s strategic importance

Deep Space Nine- Formerly an orbital Cardassian ore processing station, the Bajoran Provisional Government has turned it over to Starfleet to serve as the base of operations for the defense and exploration of the Bajor Sector and beyond. In addition to Starfleet and the Bajoran Militia, there is a large civilian population on the station that includes Bajorans, Starfleet dependents and other foreign nationals.

  • Admiral Benjamin Sisko- Starfleet Commander for the Bajoran Sector. Sisko is a veteran of the Cardassian Wars. His wife Jennifer died during the war and his son Jake lives with him on DS9, but he has misgivings about them being so close to the Cardassian border. Sisko is a Commodore at the show’s start.

  • Colonel Kira Nerys- Bajoran Liaison Officer. Kira was a member of the Bajoran Resistance during the Cardassian Occupation. She is still wanted in the Cardassian Union for terrorism. Kira coordinates activities that involve Starfleet and the Bajoran Militia. She’s uncomfortable with Starfleet’s presence and feels Bajor has cast off one yoke for another.

  • Commander Calvin Hudson- Sisko’s adjutant and old friend. Cal spent the war behind Cardassian lines coordinating a guerilla war in occupied territories, some of which remained in Cardassian hands following the war’s end. Like Sisko he lost his wife in the war. He’s outspoken about his views on peace with the Cardassians.

  • Commander Katherine Pulaski- Chief Medical Officer. A veteran officer with strong opinions, she's often a thorn in the side of Sisko and his unofficial conscience. She's also fond of needling Tuvok and has a low opinion of "spies.” Oddly enough, she has developed a close friendship with Garak.

  • Lt. Commander Tuvok- Starfleet Intelligence. A Vulcan, Tuvok oversees various ongoing SI operations in the sector. Some of which might be above Sisko's "pay grade”.

  • Lt. Rom- Chief Operations Officer. A Ferengi in the Bajoran Militia. Rom oversees keeping the station running. Given its blend of Federation, Cardassian and Bajoran technology it is a task that keeps him busy around the clock. His brother is Quark and through this connection Rom is often able to find the equipment he needs to keep the station going. Though exactly how and where is best left undiscussed. He has a past with Kira and the Resistance.

  • Chief Constable Odo- Head of Law Enforcement for the station. A shapeshifter of unknown origin, Odo was raised on the station by Bajorans. He’s strongly attached to the station and sees it as his only home. While nominally in charge of civilian law enforcement, Sisko likes to use him for Starfleet operations as well.

  • Ambassador K’Ehleyr- Federation Diplomatic Officer to the Bajoran Sector. Half Klingon and half human, K’Ehleyr is fun loving, wisecracking and hard drinking, like her mentors Curzon Dax and Lwaxana Troi. She helped draft the Armistice that ended the war. She gets along well with Sisko and is buddies with Quark. Worf, the father of her son Alexander, is often embarrassed by her “antics.”

  • Quark- A Ferengi merchant who runs a casino on DS9's promenade. He is also heavily involved in various criminal activities in the sector. As such, he and Odo have an adversarial relationship. He’s also a prime source of information for Tuvok, for a price.

  • Garak- A Cardassian tailor who runs a shop on the promenade. He is the only Cardassian still on the station. His reasons for staying are currently a mystery. Though Tuvok certainly has a few ideas.

  • Dukat - A Gul in the Cardassian military. Dukat is the former Prefect of Bajor and presided over the transition from the Cardassian Union to the Bajoran Provisional Government. Currently he is the military commander for the Cardassian territory adjacent to the Bajor Sector. He would very much like to be Prefect of Bajor again, especially with the Rift and Wormhole now in play.

  • Others

Jake Sisko- The young son of Commodore Sisko

Nog- The son of Rom and Jake’s best friend

Kassidy Yates- A freighter captain and friend of Sisko.

Keiko O’Brien- The wife of Miles O’Brien. She runs the station’s school.

Alexander Rozhenko- The son of Worf and K’Ehleyr

Kai Winn- The religious leader of the Bajorans

Lwaxana Troi. Federation Ambassador at Large. Sent to DS9 because the situation might be bigger than Sisko or K’Ehleyr can handle.

The USS Enterprise- A Galaxy class vessel, the Enterprise is the newest and most advanced ship in Starfleet. Its primary mission is exploring and establishing diplomatic relations with the new worlds beyond Bajor.

  • Captain Jean-Luc Picard- The ship's Commanding Officer. Picard is a man weary of war. The prospect of commanding a mission of exploration and diplomacy has kept him in Starfleet. He’s haunted by his past, including the loss of nearly half the crew of his previous command, the Stargazer, during the war. Because of this he keeps his current crew at a distance.

  • Commander Elizabeth Shelby- The ship's Executive Officer. Called “Number One” by Picard. She's all business, all the time and isn't afraid to speak her mind if she thinks Picard (or anyone else) is wrong. She has high standards and if she had her way the crew would be drilling around the clock. She served with Picard on the Stargazer as his Tactical Officer.

  • Ambassador Deanna Troi- An empath who’s half human and half Betazoid, Troi is a Federation Diplomatic Officer, who goals sometimes conflicts with Starfeet’s. Her Mother, Lwaxana Troi, was one of the architects of the Armistice the ended the war leading some to think her position was from connections not ability. In the past she was involved wit Will Rike, the commander of the Defiant. Upbeat and positive, she’s been called a “cheerleader” by some in the crew.

  • Lt. Commander Beverly Crusher - The ship's Chief Medical Officer. The widow of Jack Crusher, Picard's former XO and closest friend. Her son is in Starfleet, and she worries about his future.

  • Lt. Commander Michael Eddington- The ship’s Chief of Security. Eddington is veteran of the war and still suspicious of the Cardassians

  • Lt. Commander Leah Brahms- Chief Engineer. Brahms is the Federation’s leading expert in warp field theory. Part of the team who developed the Galaxy Class. During the war she was “drafted” into Starfleet. As such she’s not much for Starfleet procedures and protocols. Many in the crew call her “Professor.”

  • Lt. Commander Data- Chief Operations Officer. An android of unknown origins. As an android wishing to become more "human" Brahms finds him fascinating. Despite the time he has spent in Starfleet, Data still doesn’t quite have a grasp on the nuances of human behavior. He often speaks his mind without a filter

  • Lt. Worf- The ship's Klingon tactical officer. Worf was orphaned at an early age and raised by humans yet is fiercely proud of being Klingon and sees himself as a “warrior.” Other Klingons are amused by his idealized version of Klingon society, including his former mate K’Ehleyr

  • Ensign Ro Laren- The ship's Flight Control Officer. Born in a Bajoran refugee camp, she'd never been to Bajor before this assignment. She's at odds with native born Bajorans, who see the refugees as cowards who chose to flee rather than fight. Because of this Ro has a bit of a chip on her shoulder. Life in the camps has given her a cynical hard-edged attitude.

The USS Defiant- A Defiant class light cruiser, at least on paper. In reality the Defiant is a warship, part of the legacy of the Cardassian Wars. Its crew is small, and most are experienced combat officers. Its primary mission is defense of the station and the Bajor system. It also serves as the flagship for the Sector Commander. The Defiant Class is Admiral Sisko’s “baby.” Along with Brahms and Data, he developed the design in his previous post at the Utopia Planitia Shipyard on Mars.

  • Commander William T. Riker- The Defiant's Commanding Officer. Riker comes across as a genial sort, quick with a joke and a twinkle in his eye. He's also known to have an eye for the ladies. In a combat situation, he's all business. A clever commander with a trick or two up his sleeve. He’s been in command of the Defiant since before the end of the war. He served under Sisko in the past.

  • Lt. Commander Chakotay- The ship's Executive Officer. Chakotay's homeworld was on the frontlines of the Cardassian Wars and now lies in Cardassian territory. He’s still bitter towards the Federation for abandoning his people.

  • Lt. Ezri Tigan- Medical Officer. Tigan is Combat Field Medic and provides backup for the EMH. An unjoined Trill, who's not on the candidate list, and lives life to the fullest.

  • Lt. Tasha Yar- The ship's Chief Security Officer. Growing up as an orphan on a failed colony, where every day was a fight for survival, she keeps to herself and tries to avoid making attachments. Ezri has made it her mission to bring Yar out of her shell.

  • Lt. Geordi La Forge- The ship's Chief Engineering Officer. Blinded in the Cardassian Wars, La Forge can interface with the ship's systems through his VISOR, a device that enables him to see. As such he feels and senses what the ship does. At times this seems to cut him off from his crewmates and he wonders if he is losing his humanity.

  • Ensign Sam LaValle- Flight control officer. Gung-ho and eager to please he looks up to Riker and hopes to impress him. Unfortunately, he also tends to put his foot in his mouth.

  • Ensign Harry Kim- Operations Officer. Young, idealistic and impressionable, he feels out of place on a ship designed for war

  • Petty Officer Seska Ghel- Tactical Officer. A Bajoran who has served in Starfleet since before the war. Seska was born on Bajor but raised in Bajoran settlement in the Federation. The refugee ship she was on was rescued from a Cardassian attack by a Starfleet vessel. As such she is very pro-Federation/Starfleet. Which places her at odds with some Bajorans, including Col. Kira.

  • EMH- Experimental Medical Hologram. A new technology currently being tested on the Defiant by its inventor Dr. Louis Zimmerman, who is on board overseeing the test. (Or is he?)

The USS Voyager- An Intrepid class scout ship. Its primary mission is science and exploration. Most of its crew are in the Science division and the rest is comprised of young officers, some just out of the Academy. Because of this, the ship has been nicknamed "The School Bus." Voyager spends most of its time away from the Bajor Sector in unexplored territories on the other side of the Bajoran Wormhole and the Rift.

  • Commander Kathryn Janeway- The ship's Commanding Officer. Formerly in the Science Division, this is Janeway's first command. The thrill of the "hunt" is what drives her. She needs to know what's behind the next nebula and beyond the farthest star.

  • Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax- The ship's Executive Officer and Chief Science Officer. A joined Trill, Dax can call upon decades of experience from her previous hosts. Which is at odds with her youthful appearance. A close friend of Sisko in her previous host, he still calls her "The Old Man". A name that followed her to Voyager.

  • Lt. B'Elanna Torres- The ship's Human-Klingon Chief Engineer. She served on the frontline in the Cardassian Wars and was POW in a Cardassian labor camp. She is wary of having to make nice with the Cardassians. She feels out of place on a ship of scientists and overachievers.

  • Lt. Julian Bashir- The ship's Chief Medical Officer. Young, inexperienced and on his first deep space mission, Bashir is out of his element and tries to cover it up with bravado. O'Brien has taken him under his wing.

  • Lt. Tom Paris- Flight Control Officer. Cocky and self-assured almost to the point of arrogance, Paris is on board Voyager as a favor to Admiral Owen Paris, Janeway’s former CO. Paris has been a disciplinary problem (and embarrassment to his father) in the past. Voyager is his "last chance.

  • Lt. j.g. Annika Hansen- Science Officer. As a child Hansen was found alone on her parents’ science ship drifting through space. Her parents’ fate and the nature of their mission remain unknown. Raised by her uncle, Admiral J P Hansen, Annika entered Starfleet Academy and excelled at computer science. She is at times plagued by voices in her head. Only Dr. Bashir is aware of this.

  • Ensign Wesley Crusher- Operations Officer. A gifted young man, Crusher completed Starfleet Academy in record time with high marks. He's the youngest member of the crew and very aware of this, as such he is overeager to prove himself. His mother is the CMO on the Enterprise

  • Chief Petty Officer Miles O'Brien- The ship's Tactical Officer. The real old man aboard the ship, he has a decade on most of the crew. A veteran of the Cardassian Wars, he's one of Janeway's trusted advisors and a father figure to the younger crewmen. (Just don't tell him that). His wife, Keiko, lives on DS9 with their daughter.

Beyond the Wormhole- Through the Wormhole lies the Gamma Quadrant

  • The Dominion- A confederation of worlds in the Gamma Quadrant. Its exact nature and organization is unknown. The leadership, known as the Founders, only acts through intermediaries, usually a Vorta.

  • The Vorta- The “spokespecies” for the Dominion.

  • The Jem’Hadar- A race of soldiers engineered by the Dominion.

  • Weyoun-A Vorta who claims to represent the mysterious Founders,

Beyond the Rift- The Rift is located in the Badlands, a dangerous and unpredictable part of space near the Cardassian border, with subspace eddies and currents that are hazardous to most ships attempting to cross it. The Rift itself leads to a sub-space dimension containing a graveyard of ships. Commander Dax’s theory is that it’s the remanent of a Transwarp conduit created by the El Aurians who were fleeing an unknown enemy. The El Aurians may have sabotaged the transwarp conduit as a trap for their pursuers. With the right harmonics in place, the Rift leads to the Delta Quadrant and elsewhere. The Rift is being used by refugees to slip into the Alpha quadrant, despite the danger. This influx of people into Bajoran and Cardassian space places Bajor and the Federation in an awkward position and at odds with the Cardassian Union. Species attempting “the crossing” include the Kazon, Vidiians, Haakonians and Talaxians. Many have been captured by the Cardassians and placed in labor camps.

  • The Collective- Delta Quadrant races live in fear of the ever-encroaching Collective. As the Collective moves in, other species flee often attempting to displace those inhabiting the worlds they moved to.

  • El Aurians- A species known for listening, who originated in the Delta Quadrant. Their homeworld was destroyed centuries ago and many fled to other parts of the Galaxy. They are rumored to have created The Rift.

  • Haakonians- A humanoid species who invaded Talaxian space several decades ago, causing an exodus of Talaxians. The Haakonians themselves were pushed into Talaxian space by a species who invaded their own.

  • Kazon- The species who control the sector in Delta Quadrant side of the Rift. The Kazon are divided into several factions. The Kazon-Ogla control the planet Ocampa and access to the Rift. They decide who can travel through the Rift.

  • Ocampa- Natives of the planet Ocampa who are in servitude to the Kazon-Ogla. The species matures rapidly and has a seven-year lifespan. Their home world contains a device that controls the Rift, once used by a being called The Caretaker.

  • Talaxians- Natives to Talax, many Talaxians fled their world when it was conquered by the Haakonians and lead a nomadic existence.

  • Vidiians- A humanoid species afflicted with a disease known as the Phage.

  • Neelix-A Talaxian merchant who has offered his services as a "native guide”

  • Kes-Neelix's companion, an Ocampa. Kes is naïve but very curious.

  • Jal Jabin- Mage of the Kazon-Ogla and currently the warlord controlling the sector the Rift is located in.

Beyond Known Space The region past Cardassian and Bajoran space is unexplored. With the war over and the alliance with Bajor granting the Federation a toehold, Starfleet began to send ships and probes into the region, including the Enterprise.

  • The Commonwealth- A vast interstellar nation-state that lies beyond Cardassian and Bajoran space towards the Galactic Rim. They’ve just begun to turn their attention corewards towards the Federation. Like the Federation they contain multiple species across many worlds. The core of the Commonwealth is the Inner Worlds, all inhabited by races transplanted from the planets in or near Federation Space by the Preservers. Other members come from the Outer Worlds. Further out is the Rim. Home to miners, farmers and colonists. The citizens of the Commonwealth speak the Common Tongue, a language based on the ancient Earth language Akkadian.

  • Agadki- An Inner World populated by descendants of humans brought from Akkad in Mesopotamia circa 2168 BCE, before its destruction.

  • Amultu- The word for human in the Common Tongue.

  • Būdītu- An insecto-humanoid race from the Outer World of Ula. Known for their architecture, silks and mead. The planet is controlled by the Matriarchal Council comprised of the Vaseesa, who are rarely seen by outsiders. They are served by the Paters and Sorors who fill various roles in their society,

  • The Erkishal- A elite group of soldiers assigned to protect members of the Magisterium and high-ranking members of the Armada. They are noted for their black armor and uniforms. Their uniforms contain symbology associated with the Mesopotamian goddess Ereshkigal. Its membership is exclusively female and recruited from the Inner World of Termiskyr .

  • Gol- An ancient philosophy brought from Vulcan by the M’Sharan. Practitioners are called the Wardens of Gol. Senior Wardens are called Adepts. Those in training are called Acolytes. The leadership is known as the Elders of Gol. All species are welcome. The Elders have often served as advisors to the ruling class of the Commonwealth. The Acolytes are chosen for their psionic aptitude and are trained in its uses.

  • Himaava- An Outer World inhabited by the Shuti and the Aenar. Himaava is noted for its cold arctic like environment. There is friction between the native Shuti and the Aenar colonists

  • The Inner Worlds- Worlds inhabited by descendants of species brought by the Preservers from worlds in Federation space, including Humans and Vulcans. They form the core of the Commonwealth and dominate most levels of society.

  • M’Shara- An Inner World first settled by descendants of Vulcans known as the M’Sharan, who were brought from the city of Gol prior to its destruction before The Time of Awakening. The M’Sharan are very active in the Commonwealth’s commerce, controlling various industries and large merchant fleets.

  • Mekhane - Artificial life forms used for various tasks in the Commonwealth. Usually seen as property. Though there is a "Mekhane Rights Movement." Most high-ranking members of the Nāva and the Commonwealth upper class have human-form mekhanes as servants. Others are decidedly non-humanoid in shape. Commonly called “Mekhas.”

  • Mynos- An Inner World populated by descendants of Minoans brought from Earth following the Thera eruption in 1600 BCE. The first Mekhane were created on Mynos.

  • The Nāva - The Commonwealth’s space fleet, built around large ships called starcrusiers. They are mobile bases that house fighter squadrons, transports and ground troops. The Nāva is much more military oriented than Starfleet.

  • The Outer Worlds- Worlds inhabited by species native to Commonwealth space.

  • Puḫru - The capital world of the Commonwealth. A planet spanning city that houses the Commonwealth’s government which is also called Puḫru. The legislature, known as Magisterium, has two components, the Inner House is made up of representatives of the Inner Worlds and the Outer House representing the Outer Worlds. The head of State is the High Magistrate.

  • Preservers- A mysterious group of aliens known for transporting endangered groups of sentients from their homeworlds to other planets. The Commonwealth has a high concentration of “Preserver Worlds.” Some of the Commonwealth’s technology is reversed engineered from Preserver technology.

  • The Rim- Worlds on the edge of Commonwealth space. Bašmu is imprisoned on a world in the Rim. His supporters have bases there from which they attack the Commonwealth.

  • Shuti- A tall anthropoidal species native to the planet Himaava. Known for their tenacity, strength and loyalty, they are highly valued as soldiers and mercenaries. Most Shuti have silver-white hair over much of their bodies.

  • Termiskyr- An Inner World populated by humans transported from ancient Scythia on Earth. Home to an elite group of women soldiers called the Erkishal. Natives are known as Termiskyra.

  • Ula- An Outer World inhabited by the Būdītu

  • BašmuThe exiled former ruler of the Commonwealth, who is imprisoned on a planet in the Rim. Once a Warden of Gol, a trip through the Galactic Barrier gave him vast powers that he used to take over the Commonwealth. Defeated, he was placed in statis but his followers still cause havoc throughout the Commonwealth.

  • Brigadier Eshtah – Commander of the Mušḫuššu Class Commonwealth starcruiser the Amar. Eshtah is an Termiskyra Amultu.

  • High Magistrate Inkedo- The leader of the Commonwealth’s legislature. An Amultu from Adgadki.

  • Outer Magistrate Kherchaac- The Shuti leader of the Outer House and former member of the Commonwealth military.

  • Elder Nhim- A wizen M’Sharan practitioner of Gol. She represents Gol interests in Parliament

  • P’Malyn- A Mynosan Amultu, the former Science Magistrate of the Commonwealth. An expert in mekhane design.

  • Inner Magistrate T’ahl- A M’Sharan merchant and leader of the Inner House. He is eager to see what new markets contact with the Federation will bring.

  • Science Magistrate Zlev- A Būdītu Soror who is keenly interested in the technology of the Federation.

So there you have it.

I would NOT bring in anyone from any previous iteration to advise, consult, or discuss ideas prior to making the new version (whatever form that might take). Basically—ship, a crew, space setting in the future. Do whatever you (creatives) want. Surprise me.

It would depend on who your bringing in. Clearly Sussman has a good idea for the Archer show. And if someone like Behr or Ron Moore were interested in returning you’d be dumb to not at least listen to their pitch.

I guess. I treated the question as one that had zero real world possibility. As such, it’s what I would do with no restrictions. I appreciate that others have clearly thought about this in far greater detail than I have and some among them would want to maintain, even expand, on parts of the existing franchise. But at something around 900-1000 hours of the franchise already available, I would want a totally clean slate. YMMV.

Something that’s been generally true in, I think, every era in Trek: the rhetoric is about exploration and discovery, and we certainly get stories in that vein, but basically it ends up being about the “Space Navy”. So maybe split the difference by running two series at the same time, ideally both in the 32nd/33rd century:

- One series really is about Starfleet as the Space Navy, with a focus on patrolling Federation worlds and spacelanes (and showing us lots of unique Federation member worlds), and (if still the 32nd century) on continuing to tie them back together and rebuild. It’s also our more action-oriented show, and inevitably the more popular one.

- And the other is about Starfleet as “Space NASA”, specifically exploring unknown space (because there’s always more unexplored space, even in the 32nd century), and ideally doing actual (if fictional) science and more overtly cerebral plots, and not military/action stuff. Of necessity, this one has a lower budget and lower ratings expectations, and will be much more dependent on writing than spectacle (hence the above re budget and expectations).

Both, of course, should still do morality plays as often as possible; and both can be ship shows (though they don’t necessarily have to be). But differently from each other.

If I were working for a hypothetical Ellison-free Paramount+ at some time in the future? I'm having a hard time avoiding the thought that the whole thing just needs to start over at that point. Even with how much I'm enjoying some of the new productions, the weight of continuity is so heavy at this point, and with it, there has been a great deal of thematic drift that any direct continuation would waste so much energy fighting against. (Starfleet Academy seems to be about that idea, so doing it again would now be redundant. Hopefully they do it well.)

Our world, our society, our technology, our understanding of the universe have all changed massively over the last 60+ years. Whoever takes it, really needs to tear it down to its basics, decide what elements work now and discard everything that doesn't. Then fill in the concept with things that speak to people in the here-and-now.

A new show called Star Trek Civil war, final episode would be a girl named Benni watching it all taking place in a snow globe. And no one will be related to Spock.
