Should Wesley have been kicked out of the Academy?

Dropship

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Newbie
I forget the episode title, but after a cadet in his flight squad was killed, Wesley lied to the enquiry board to cover up the fact they were attempting a prohibited flight manoeuvre, but when the truth came to light he was reprimanded but allowed to stay at the Academy.
Were the enquiry too soft on him? I'd have given him the boot myself.

It's addressed in the episode...

WESLEY: They should've expelled all of us.
PICARD: They very nearly did. Mister Locarno made an impassioned plea for the rest of you. He said that he'd used his influence as squadron leader to convince you to attempt the Kolvoord manoeuvre and then to cover up the truth. He asked to take full responsibility.

Aye, I thought it was a nice scene. Picard laying out exactly how close they all came to expulsion really sells the weight of what they did and why Locarno’s sacrifice matters. I just wish we’d actually seen his plea to save his friends on screen.

I mean, in the end it's not like Wesley graduated and became an officer anyway, so moot point if he should have been kicked out or not.

No. I'll stand by him. You can't kick him out for being annoying. If that were so. Troi would be long gone years before.

Ethically, Wesley made mistakes, but he did not surrender 15 minutes in his first mission to weird-hatted soap opera actors. Cut him some slack, Jack.

Shaw: No.

And he still should have and criminal charges filed. All of them should be expelled and charged.

Which would mean actor-wise (not character-wise), this young man would inevitably end up in another academy in the far-distant past.....most likely a boy's school for rejects supervised by former Oscar winners and Denholm Elliott types*. Keep him away from any weaponry and he'll manage all right.

(*Plus playing second-fiddle to a future Hobbit.)

..Locarno took the blame on behalf of the entire squadron so they could stay in.
Yes, even though Locarno took the blame, the panel still rightly kicked him out for bullying the others into trying the manoeuvre.
They all KNEW the manoeuvre was prohibited by the Academy but still went ahead and attempted it, getting Josh killed in the process and then trying to cover it up, until CCTV exposed their lies. so i'd have booted them all including Wesley for not having the guts to stand up to Locarno's bullying.

But, seriously, a cadet died on their watch. If not permanently expelled and criminal charges filed, then expelled for two years and working to be readmitted.

Not a very smart stunt. Everyone would see the maneuver and most would know it was banned. It's not going to take too much brains to figure out that the pilots must have disregarded orders.
Yeah, perhaps the cadets thought 'lets do it, what could possibly go wrong?' and hoped the Academy bosses would just regard it as graduation youthful high jinks and forget it.

I think all the cadets should have been expelled at minimum. And at the very least, Locarno should have gone to prison. Of course, we know what actually happened. Locarno did go to prison, changed his name to Tom Paris, and the rest is history.

All because of dad.

I'm trying to apply the "real life" test. A bunch of Air Force or Naval Aviation cadets try a stupid stunt that's been specifically banned, one of them gets killed, they all try to cover it up. Yes, I have to think expelled at least, probable criminal charges as well. It's noble of Locarno to volunteer to take responsibility and all, but the others really can't escape their own roles in going along with it and saying nothing until it was too late. And the coverup.

Superior pilots demonstrate their superior judgement by avoiding situations in which they must rely on their superior skill.

But if he didn't say that, he's not Star Fleet. That's his training/programming. If he doesn't say just that exactly, and then open his wrists to save a life, he's a broken villain.

Also this arrogant cadet is trying to manipulate a board of Admirals with possibly centuries of cumulative experience, with text book kidshit psychology. An adult can recognize when they are being manipulated. It's an unsavory feeling.

But lets not for get. Welsey is a god. Protecting the Universe from an emotionally pitted Wes rampaging, blowing up planets is... Wesley's first entrance exam was fixed! They put him up against real losers, and he still failed. Back to First Duty, 3 of these Cadets were kept on the books, so that Wes didn't notice that he was a mad dog being kept in a box, and Locarno just pissed them off, so #uck'im.

Kirk killed Gary Mitchel for a good reason.
