Always tricky guessing off this type of material but I guess it's showing the end of the X-men (see the sentinels in the background). I guess the question is if that happens because of Doom or before Doom?

no more gimmicky than Infinity War and Endgame was.

Not the same thing at all. That was the organic culmination of the storylines the MCU had been building up for years. This seems to be creating a storyline just for the sake of reviving popular characters whose stories already ended years ago. In this case, characters who aren't even part of the same continuity. I don't want the MCU to dredge up the Fox X-Men one last time, I want them to introduce their own X-Men.

This whole thing seems so gimmicky. It's like Marvel no longer has faith in its ability to draw an audience and feels it has to pander to nostalgia.

The first Avengers movie was based on a gimmick. Bring together several superhero characters who have already had their own movie or were already established. Something you might see in a comic book but never before in the movies. If we don't count Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back. It does feel desperate but you know as far as desperation acts go it's not so bad of a idea. The movie it makes me think of is Deadpool and Wolverine and that turned out to be a successful and fun movie.

I'm watching these trailers and thinking this movie is going to be nothing but the greatest hits, MCU style. Of course they are only like a minute teasers so I know more is coming, but this is nothing like Endgame or Infinity War. This is Marvel desperate for people to come back so they are bringing characters that were box office hits hoping that lightning will strike twice.

For me, I'm going to think twice about seeing this in the theater if it's a really long film. I don't want to see the greatest hits. I want to see a continuation of storylines that Marvel introduced in the last few years. I know that's not going to happen because they were box office bombs, but I've moved past X-Men and Endgame told me to move past Steve Rogers and Thor. I don't want to spend 4-5 hours in the theater (Probably anxious to use the Bathroom in the middle of said film) thinking nothing new is brought to the table.

Maybe it's just me but I see the movie as maybe already setting up it's theme and it's not just going to be a bunch of cameos. I feel like this movie is going to be about Family with a special emphasis on fatherhood. Rogers and Thor being dads was the main focus of both of their trailers. Franklin Richards I think is going to be a big part of the story and I would not be shocked if Black Panthers son is as well. Plus I think it's been established that Cassie is on the movie and she is Ant-Mans daughter. Also don't be shocked if we see Iron Man's daughter as well. Professor X and Magneto are basically father figure types.

In general I agree with that. Obviously it depends on a case by case basis. It bugs me when nostalgia is used a blanket term for continuing the past. Often it basically equals ageism. The old actors need to retire or die. As people live longer and longer it’s not surprising are fiction mirrors that. Also the notions of what is considered nostalgia or not is very arbitrary and selective. Is celebrating holidays and birthdays nostalgia? Continuing traditions? I am not at all saying new ideas, performers, youth is bad. Western culture tends to worship those things more than “nostalgia”. These are big complicated ideas and I am not suggesting I have the answers but just creating questions. Than simplifying it as nostalgia is good or bad.
I agree completely with all of this, but especially the part about ageism. I hadn't quite thought of dislike for nostalgia as a form of ageism but I think you're right on the money in that particular regard.

We will eventually get new actors to play the X-Men, probably countless. What is the harm of enjoying previous ones while they are still alive and vital and got underused in the past.
Exactly!

Besides, as I already made clear, I will never tire of watching Sir Pat and Sir Ian sharing the screen.

But that's not true either. Granted the Multiverse build-up has been a bit incoherent and the Jonathan Majors situation made it worse. I'm also not sold on Doom stepping in but I'm doing that crazy thing of waiting to see how the film handles the situation all before judging it.

Regardless, the fact remains that there has been plenty of build-up for this exact kind of movie. You might not like it but you're incorrect that this isn't an organic (but, again, a messy one) culmination.

And they are going to. Patience grasshopper.
Seriously. We've known for a long time that this was Marvel's long-term game plan for the X-Men.

Then you're oblivious and naive.

It signals desperation in a way that bringing RDJ in to play Dr. Doom didn't and is also a metaphorical Middle Finger to Anthony Mackie's version of Captain America.

None of that matters if the movie is good. Also Mackie is not getting the middle finger. He is in the movie and despite the last Captain America' movie bombing, he is going to get another chance to win people over for more adventures moving forward. He might still have a future in the MCU were as RDJ and Evans are likely not going to be in anything more beyond these upcoming Avengers movie.

We (myself and others) already spent pages and pages explaining how and why bringing Chris Evans back is a metaphorical Middle Finger to Sam Wilson's Captain America.

But why wait? It seems to undercut the new cast if the first major X-Men appearance in the MCU is just a rehash of the old one.

(I'm not counting Deadpool vs. Wolverine, because that wasn't really an MCU movie, it was a coda to the Fox Marvel universe that tied into the MCU, using elements from it but having no actual impact on its continuity.)

Introducing your main new X-Men characters in a Avengers movie I don't think makes sense. It's a Avengers movie. Not a X-Men movie. While the X-Men can have a role in and you may be even add a few new X-Men characters in the mix, the focus still needs to be on the Avengers and characters/actors will associate with The Avengers. I would argue RDJ being Doom is also what makes it okay for Doom to be a Avengers bad guy instead of first using him in a Fantastic Four movie.

I'm not naive, I know this is like giving Sam Wilson the middle finger to Captain America. I just think it's the right decision considering the current state of the MCU. After Endgame, some viewers stopped following Marvel simply because Chris Evans and RDJ left. These decisions are made to attract those who stopped watching, and I don't see anything to be angry about. If I were Kevin Feige, I would have made the same decision. The real problem will arise if they actually reboot it.
