Spoilers Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

I think the BBC having almost no Christmas programming narrative is overdone.

They may lack a real big hitter like Gavin & Stacey or Wallace and Gromit but most programmes that usually have a Christmas special do this year as well.

Call The Midwife, Mrs Browns Boys and Strictly all on Christmas Day. Amandaland appearing there for the first time with Jennifer Saunders joining Joanna Lumley on the series.

Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise both have specials. David Attenborough has a new show, the new series of the Night Manager is launching as is The Traitors.

There's a new Ghost Story for Christmas plus all the usual celebrity/game show stuff including Celebrity Apprentice and Gladiators.

I’m just going off what I saw on Adam Martin talking about just Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It did look pretty stale across the terrestrial board.

It’s half animated, but I bet if they did that on Christmas afternoon, with proper trailers showing Tom it would do bigger special numbers than anything since Capaldi regenerated.
Unfortunately so, and I'd argue since Smith's regeneration even!

Quite possibly. With the animation ‘for the kids’ and the retro nature, and the ability to market it as ‘lost and never shown on BBC television, from when Tom Baker was Doctor Who…’ I suspect it would possibly have the biggest numbers since City of Death. But like to hedge my bets.

Davies on the current state of the series future:

"There was funding for Doctor Who before Disney and there will be funding for it after Disney. I'm sure people at the BBC are running around with clipboards and spreadsheets trying to work something out - and they will. I do look at the Christmas schedule for 2025 and see a horrific gap and think ‘Where is Doctor Who?!’ but don’t worry, it will absolutely be coming back.”

And just a reminder; he's not a BBC employee so not being involved in whatever is happening has no reflection on whether he gets asked to continue making the show or not.

That's quite literally the funniest thing I've read on here in ages! :guffaw:

Whittaker got more than 7 million viewers for Resolution, as did Tennant for The Star Beast and Wild Blue Yonder (and The Giggle got close to 7 million) and Ncuti for the Church on Ruby Road.

But no, a half animated story from the 70s is going to blow them all out of the water!

Ah Jaime, sometimes I wonder if you're actually a parody account ;)

No.
But sometimes I am not entirely being serious ;)

(As is the case here. Though it would have been a worthwhile experiment this year since there’s not much new on. I spent most of my Who Fan life thinking Tom was extremely overrated, and it was annoying seeing modern Who run by people who thought his era was the be all and end all. I have come around to Tom, but not to the people, and still think it’s not so much overrated as that other eras are underrated.)

Also, only one of those is a Christmas Special, so the others aren’t really relevant.

Shada is the kind of thing they'd stick on either BBC 2 or 4 around Christmas like the episode of the Ice Warriors last night.

Except you didn't specify Christmas specials. You said:

Everything I mentioned is a Special. You really do need to be specific ;)

That's thin ;)

Was honestly my intent though. I quite liked most of Power of The Doctor, though the regen cause itself was weak and it just sort of petered out and was a bit odd plot wise in places. In fact, I probably enjoyed it a bit more than TUAT.
Given we’ve also a got Two Ronnies from the mid seventies in the schedule though…

Christmas Day ratings were jaw-dropping bad, with the most watched programme getting barely over 4 million.

Leaving aside the reasons for casting her, a Doctor Who special starring Billie Piper (and possibly Tennant) would easily have wound up near the top.
