I don't think it's a secret that Keiko often comes under fire on the BBS for various reasons.

There was some curiosity from myself and other posters as to whether posters who have experienced marriage might have a more favorable view of Keiko in general than posters who have not experienced marriage.

Let's find out!

Thanks for creating this poll!

I don't have time at the moment, but later tonight I will elaborate on my feelings and vote.

I had a favorable view of Keiko before I was married, and it hasn't changed since I am married.

I think the way she was written on DS9 is consistent with the writing of most other supporting characters on DS9: The role is well written, vivid and believable, and with a dash of humor.

Perhaps her marriage to Miles is the most realistic, but at least the most sympathetic portrayal of a relationship in a Star Trek series so far, imo.

It is tough to choose, because I didn't like her mostly because I was young. Back then everything was more black and white for me. "She knew she could not do her work and that Miles has a huge responsibility with his job, so what is she nagging about?"

Because I am older I understand her more but It has nothing to do with being married

Yeah, DS9 bucks the trend of that quaint notion of "Hey, everyone loves families, let's have characters hook up! We can give them kids too!" yet we ended up with Wesley and Alexander and the went-nowhere-because-the-new-show-wasn't-making-it-feel-authentic Troi/Riker and the always-loopy-and-quietly-dropped Troi/Worf, the Crusher ill-fated fam, and, best of all, the life of Alexander only showing what a bad father Worf was because TNG was throwing everything at the wall. Like when Maxwell and Fran got married, nobody knew what to do with it. And for a different Max, but with 99? Ditto There's another Seven from another show that just disappeared... And the less said of poor cousin Oliver the better but it wasn't the actor's fault! And Dorothy said in the very first episode she wasn't going to marry again but in the series finale 7 years later she marries... Sadly, all these references are sitcoms because most outright dramas aren't my gig and most sci-fi just won't do domestic situations. So long-winded story aside, it's a huge win that DS9 managed to make the O'Briens compelling.

13 votes in, for all the kvetching I've seen about Keiko in the past, it seems weird that none of those people have apparently participated here yet...

Also, I liked Troi/Worf and it bugged me that we never really got to see what happened to their relationship (I can't remember whether PIC really got into that at any point). I daresay I liked it more than Troi/Riker (though "Nepenthe" was a pretty good ep), and I especially liked that they flirted with the idea of them as a couple before going with it.

Surprised by the results so far? ;)

well my last marriage was an unpleasant disaster, but over time I've begun to really take stock of things, look at the whole period of time with equanimity and compassion, really learn to accept who we both were as people, and the situations that affected us and thanks to this I have realized it was actually entirely her fault.

however, none of that has anything to do with the fact that Keiko possibly killed Miles' pet spider.

I voted that my opinion of Keiko was unfavorable before I got married but became favorable after. This is SOMEWHAT accurate, but it is more accurate to say that my opinion of her was simply less before I got married than after, not necessarily bad or unfavorable.

What I mean by that is this: before my marriage, there were times I found her rather shrill and came off as a bit overbearing at times, but not a bad person or character. After marriage, I saw things from the lens of a married man, and suddenly just about everything about her actions or discussions made better sense. Or more precisely, having a wife made me see things more from Keiko's point of view, and beacuse of that, my opinion of Keiko softened and grew much higher.

People tend to talk about the bigger scenes between Keiko and Miles when they talk about her: their arguments about her career being put on hold by going to DS9, how she asks to have him go with her and Molly when the station is in danger instead of staying behind, etc. And I can't really fault her those conversations. They made sense.

But the scenes that really show Keiko as not only a good character but a great wife are the little ones. Like these:

"IN THE HANDS OF THE PROPHETS" - in the beginning, she 'cautions' him about being careful who he shares his jumja with. While this may appear like her being jealous, I look at this as simply a married couple poking fun at each other. I have found that the relationships that last the longest are the ones where some healthy humor is involved... being comfortable with your wife or husband enough to be able to have a sense of humor about things. This scene shows Keiko and Miles ARE comfortable with each other, comfortable enough to have some gentle ribbing now and then.

"ACCESSION" - she sees Miles sad that he is spending less time with his best friend, Bashir. She has good enough instincts to also know Bashir misses hanging out with him, too. Which is precisely why she calls Bashir up and tells him exactly what she told Miles.

"HARD TIME" - throughout the entire episode, she is very patient and supportive of Miles while he is recovering. From her simply leaving him sleep on the floor, undisturbed but just covering him with the covers, to being very soft spoken with him for most of the episode. She even didn't get even angrier at him when he got up and yelled at Molly (which she would have been completely justified to be, given the situation at that moment)... she just put her in her arms and looked at Miles, without saying a word. She knew that was all that was needed... and he left their quarters right then and there. She was fully supportive of him, but had a line that she wouldnt allow to be crossed. And even afterward when she appears at the end, she didn't retain any sort of anger at that incident, just was happy he walked back in their quarters.

While those scenes seem small, they are huge in showing us how great she is. So I'll always be Team Keiko.

No problem. People on this board come and go in waves. And for 25 of my 26 years here, I wasn't actively involved in Niner-dom. I wouldn't have known one way or another. So, I believe you when you say there was a contingent of people here who don't/didn't like Keiko.
