I bet they watched The Squire of Gothos a few times. Have you?And the Q character was bizarrely written, acting like a child while being 8000+ years old, where in TNG, a new Q matures rapidly. I wonder if any of this shows writers have ever actually seen a Star Trek episode.
Then your frame of reference is skewed.I've missed all the TOS episodes, having never seen them. My introduction to trek were the movies.
Then context for this episode is lacking and the writers have definitely watched TOS episodes.I've missed all the TOS episodes, having never seen them. My introduction to trek were the movies.
I guess. Having just read the synopsis for The Squire of Gothos and finding that the character in the SNW episode is the same Trelane character, it appears the writers decided to use lore from TOS over what was established in Voyager. Then context for this episode is lacking and the writers have definitely watched TOS episodes.
A good call. TOS is the blueprint.I guess. Having just read the synopsis for The Squire of Gothos and finding that the character in the SNW episode is the same Trelane character, it appears the writers decided to use lore from TOS over what was established in Voyager.
Given SNW is a lead-in to TOS from a storytelling point, this makes sense.I guess. Having just read the synopsis for The Squire of Gothos and finding that the character in the SNW episode is the same Trelane character, it appears the writers decided to use lore from TOS over what was established in Voyager.
Maybe. The problem is the inconsistency. For people like myself who haven't seen TOS because its so dated it comes across like I described it in my OP.A good call. TOS is the blueprint.
Sounds like a "you problem."Maybe. The problem is the inconsistency. For people like myself who haven't seen TOS because its so dated it comes across like I described it in my OP.
A reasonable attitude by the writers.I guess. Having just read the synopsis for The Squire of Gothos and finding that the character in the SNW episode is the same Trelane character, it appears the writers decided to use lore from TOS over what was established in Voyager.
I think it's obvious that, regardless of actor ages, QJr/Trelane's appearances on Voyager are supposed to be LATER in his timeline than his TOS/SNW appearances.Maybe. The problem is the inconsistency. For people like myself who haven't seen TOS because its so dated it comes across like I described it in my OP.
It's not inconsistent with Voyager.I guess. Having just read the synopsis for The Squire of Gothos and finding that the character in the SNW episode is the same Trelane character, it appears the writers decided to use lore from TOS over what was established in Voyager.
How? He was conceived on Voyager. But I suppose I'm probably stumbling into fanfic time paradox territory there.I think it's obvious that, regardless of actor ages, QJr/Trelane's appearances on Voyager are supposed to be LATER in his timeline than his TOS/SNW appearances.
Remember when Janeway gave Q advice and seemed to come back instantly, when he said it had been years. Don't be so linear and stop thinking in four dimesnions. How? He was conceived on Voyager. But I suppose I'm probably stumbling into fanfic time paradox territory there.

He's a Q. Remember Q popping up at the end of PIC Season 3 after dying in Season 2?How? He was conceived on Voyager. But I suppose I'm probably stumbling into fanfic time paradox territory there.
I know they aren't linear, but that doesn't eliminate the inconsistencies. He's a Q. Remember Q popping up at the end of PIC Season 3 after dying in Season 2?
The Q aren't linear. Trelane's appearance in SNW happens six years before he first discovers the Enterprise in TOS.
More TrekLit than fanfic.I know they aren't linear, but that doesn't eliminate the inconsistencies.
- Q Junior is born in Voyager (2373)
- Trelane appears in SNW (2259-2267)
- In The Squire of Gothos, Kirk's crew (including Spock) reacts to Trelane as if he is an entirely new type of being, despite the show having retconned the crew into having already met the being earlier in time
- In the TOS episode, Trelane is shown to have an amplifier device behind his mirror, suggesting his powers were limited, while In the TNG/Voyager era, Q uses only a snap of the fingers
As of yesterday, I had no idea about the existence of Trelane or the Trelane/Q fanfic connection, thinking (correctly, for someone familiar only what's been shown on screen in the last 30 years) they were entirely different entities having seen TNG, Voyager, all the movies starting with the originals, Enterprise, Discovery, Picard, and now SNW. Now the showrunners apparently retcon Q Junior as the same being as Trelane.
I haven't seen every episode of trek ever made, nor do I have any experience with the vast library of fan fiction this franchise has produced. I imagine that's true of the vast majority of the audience. I found the show's portrayal of the character bizarre, even if I enjoyed the episode overall.
That's my view of it anyway. Clearly there are a lot of passionate fans here who disagree with how I'm interpreting it.
