Riker and Deanna Troi were supposed to be "imzadi" soul mates, right?

Because he can't get close to anyone except Deanna. He's playing around instead of facing his feelings and ending their relationship when he got promoted. Something was holding him from getting back together until Insurrection.

He always wanted to be with Deanna, but never really was willing to go for it for a long time due to...reasons.

Didn't they agree to cool it as long as they were serving on the same ship, in the same chain of command?

Always felt like a huge missed opportunity to me, their unique link is something that could have come up much more often. The dreamy weirdness of how they were set up in "Farpoint" doesn't really gel with the show's later tone, I suppose.

I love that bit where they speak into each other's minds in the pilot, which literally never comes up again as far as I remember. I think the only hint of it after that is that she can feel his mind when he's trapped in The Royale.

I’m not sure why I even bother, but here goes …

Why are you singling out him, considering Deanna was shown to have a few male encounters during the run of the show as well.

As for the nature of their relationship: as they mentioned in a couple of episodes, even though they meant a lot to each other, they allowed themselves to have relationships with other people as well.

the weird non gender "female' alien
What an odd thing to say. Pray tell, what was “weird” about Soren? Also, the major plot point of the episode is that she identifies as female, so there‘s really no reason to put it in quotes.

I think that the writers originally intended to have those two get closer over the course of the show, but plans changed. Call it a "world under construction" inconsistency. "Home Soil" and "When the Bough Breaks" create similar issues.

I don't think he ever transmitted thoughts to her. He just got one sent to him from her. Kind of makes you wonder though about the telepathy she does with her mom. They often say that due to her half human genetics, she doesn't have full telepathy, like typical Betazoids. Her mom does, and could be making herself a better bridge to Deanna, that she couldn't normally do, but then there's that one bit with Riker. So now you have to wonder if bonding intimately with her strengthens her abilities too

Did anyone else get the impression they were “friends with benefits” at times during TNG’s run? Episodes like “Ménage a Troi” suddenly have them very touchy feely and I’m sure on more than one occasion we saw them cuddling up together.

Yeah, a little, particularly when it was convenient to the plot lol. He sure seemed to be in loud voice over who the father of The Child was.

She seemed to be taking his tryst with Ro Laren a little personally in Conundrum too. Hell, the fact that Worf, of all people, was tiptoing around Will about dating her, seemed to suggest others knew it wasn't 100% platonic between them, even by season 7.

They were not together. She was literally engaged. Something she conveniently hid from him.

Well it should probably be brought up to the guy you're dating.
But it's not like it was deliberate hiding of it. She probably just thought it was a non-issue that was forgotten about, once she'd reached adulthood, moved on with her life in Starfleet, & nothing came of it. At the very least, she convinced herself it was forgotten
