Question about Seska...

t_smitts

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I've wondered occasially how the show would have been different if Seska had been revealed to be a Cardassian in disguise but not a collaborator, instead remaining on the ship.

Martha Hackett just looks wicked!

I mean that as every bit of a compliment to the actress.

Knowing how well she made Seska so evil, I wouldn't want to picture the character any other way.

Sorry.:(

She was brilliant. Love her. Such a baddie.

That could have made for some cool drama, particularly with the Maquis crewmates dealing with her. It could have been quite a character portrayal; however she would have had to be less manipulative, less evil, because even when in disguise she was something of a troublemaker. If she continued, no one would trust her and she'd probably just want to leave anyway....

But to make her a more sympathetic character...that would be dramatic.

Ooooo, or have her be undercover the whole time only to find out after 7 years onboard, she's been sabotaging the ship the whole time.

Sinister.

Nor can I. I think her performance was the best of the show. And it really was all acting. Anyone who's met Martha knows she's 100% sweetheart.

I also wish they went about things differently and kept her around longer. She was easily my favorite non-DS9 villain.

I also would have like them to explore that rumor that she was supposed to be Illyana. I would have been interesting, that is, beside the fact she, you know, looks nothing like Visitor.

The Best part for ne though was when TPTB killed Seska off. I didn't care for her at all.

Meh. I was never a huge fan of Seska. Martha can act, and I respect her for it, but the character was way too stereotypical. Her relationship with Chakotay didn't really do much for me either. I think the writers should have simply left Tuvok as the only mole in the Maquis crew.

Why would a Cardassian be in disguise on the ship for any *other* reason than espionage?

Seska is definitely one of my favorite Star Trek villains. I always enjoyed the episodes when she and Culluh were involved in some sceme. What a wonderful couple.

I actually liked the plot with Seska revealed as a Cardassian spy, her defection to the Kazon and her plottings against Voyager. But I think that it was a mistake to kill her off. She should have been captured and put into the brig. Then there would have been some situation in which they needed her knowledge or help so she would have been released from jail. Then she could have done some more manipulation.

the character was way too stereotypical.

When it comes to Star Trek, all the villains (at least all the major ones) are stereotypical and cliched. I'm trying to think of one that isn't and I'm coming up a cropper. So you just have to go with what's good, I guess.

Eh, maybe so. I guess part of my annoyance with Seska is that it seemed to me like the writers wanted her to be a female Gul Dukat - a schemer who was mainly acting out of self-interest but was also able to work with others when it suited her. And, in that case, Dukat did it better. ;) But that's merely my own impression, and perhaps any similarities between the two were just coincidence.

I think Seska would have been better if she herself was a deep cover agent and the Doctor found her out after she was injured and then she turned evil at that point, making her turn to evil be the reactivation of her cardassian programming and the fault of the Janeway for wanting to extract info from her when Janeway found out she was a deep cover operative.

Didn't most Cardassians act this way?

They stated repeatedly on several Trek shows and eps. that it was part of their culture. Picard or Sisko even mention Cardassian children are raised to behave this way.

I think it's also part of the metaphor of why they look like snakes.
You know, like how Sisko was the Bajorian Jesus. In the Bible, Satan is often represented by a snake or serpent. If Bajoians are the chosen people, Cardassians are the people of the Devil.
