Recently, Super Mario, Sonic and Minecraft movies have reversed this.

I haven't seen the first two, so I can't speak to that, but I would agree with Minecraft's success breaking the mold.

If you like animation, I recommend Super Mario. If you like Jim Carrey movies or live-action family movies, you can watch Sonic.

They are on the same track as superheros. A few early attempts that don't understand the source material, then a few early classics and bombs, then mainstream success until burnout. We are right around the first X-men film in the video game timeline, I estimate.
