Spoilers Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

No, Klein was played by Tracey Childs. As pointed out upthread, Nicola Walker played Liv Chenka, a medical technician from Kaldor City who travelled with the Seventh and Eighth Doctors.

Ah! Gotcha. Was it set during the events of Colditz from the Sevenths point of view? When he goes off and comes back again?

it occurred to me that Nicola Walker and Sheridan Smith, both former BF companions of Eight, have gone on to be two of the biggest draws on British tv. Bigger than Paul, in all honesty.

Different time. Paul was where they are in the nineties, hence him getting the gig in the first place. Nicola and Sheri were getting their big breaks in the early 2ks (Spooks and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps) as TV was undergoing some changes. McGann was already moving into voiceover work by then, and a more laid back career that followed. Different kinds of celebrity too — Sheri is a very different kind of figure to them both.

Here is my Doctor Who idea. Juno Temple as the Doctor teams up with Jeff Goldblum as a future Doctor in search of his missing Tardis. Getting into some adventures along the way. Also Goldblum has been living in America for 30 years. Stuck their because that is how long he has been without his Tardis.

Millie Gibson: 'The stories about me were horrific - I wasn't able to speak up'

In fact, the comparisons were so blatant that Davies insisted Gibson chop her hair into a short bob, lest she look “a bit too much like Billie”. You can spot the similarities in the characters: two young, blonde women from working-class backgrounds. Still, it’s easy to forget that Piper, also a former teen star, was 23 during her first series. Even with her experience, handling this increased scrutiny as a just-turned-19-year-old was a whole other ball game, Gibson learned, when a tabloid report emerged in the summer of 2023 claiming that she had been acting like a “diva” behind the scenes.
She didn’t comment on the claims at the time – not when the allegations first emerged, nor when new reports half a year later claimed that she’d been “dropped” from the show before her first series could even air. That wasn’t the case: Gibson had known that she was coming back for series two when the “diva” reports came out.
Unfortunately, revealing this would have jeopardised the series’ tightly wrapped plots, putting her in a “tough” position where she wasn’t “able to speak up” and defend herself. “I couldn’t be like, ‘It’s a lie!’ [because] they’d be like, ‘Well, that’s spoilers,’” she says. “It was quite hard to stand up for myself without ruining the show. I was like, ‘Oh, this is horrific because it just looks like it’s true.’”
It must have been pretty unpleasant, reading this about herself at such a young age. “Oh, it was awful,” she says, an obvious pang of pain in her voice. “What was frustrating was the amount of people that were like, ‘Oh, sorry, this has happened mate,’” – referring to her inaccurately reported removal from the show – “and I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s not [happened], but thank you.’”
If she took anything away from the experience, it was the way those close to her rallied in private. Gatwa – who faced his own negative attention when he was cast as the Doctor – was a particular comfort. “He’s had his time with that, and it’s just about just being able to try and shut it out,” she says.
I always figured the rumors about her were false but I'm sorry she wasn't even allowed to defend herself in the face of internet opinion. The BBC hung her out to dry, all for their almighty secrecy bullshit, and that's a disgrace.

I doubt all the diva nonsense was true. I do *not* doubt that she either tapped out or was written out in the hope ‘look! New companion!’ would give a bump. This is apparent from the fact Chandra was very late casting, not to mention the screwed up finale’s and overall story.

Seems highly unlikely she was dropped to give the show a bump given she was really popular.

Clearly there was some reason they replaced her full time with Belinda because it's bleedin' obvious that Belinda's story, and in particular how it ended with baby Poppy, was supposed to happen to Ruby given she was the one who told Poppy "I wish I was your mum" all the way back in Space Babies and given her own history as a foundling.

Something happened, but I strongly doubt it was that Millie was a diva, if anything maybe they realised they'd lumped far too much pressure on her and either RTD/Millie/both realised she couldn't do another full season.

That’s basically my thought on it.
I *doubt* it was for the bump, but at the same time it’s the only other logical thing. I mean, I doubt it was because you can pay a younger person less and she got older, but she left for *some* reason that clearly wasn’t planned. The fact she was carrying the first shoots pretty much on her own, and on location, probably wasn’t a good start.

Love him or hate him, I think it’s pretty unequivocal that casting Ncuti specifically at that time negatively affected the series as well.

It's a shame there was so much toxic hate for Ruby. Personally I think Millie knocked it out of the park in S1; her S2 arc was considerably...less.

When they cast Varadu they should have put a hold on filming until all the scripts could be properly rewritten - as we all saw, the finale was a mess.
