Any Fellow Stargate Fans Here?

Loved Stargate SG1 and Atlantis so much, hated Universe at the time but revisiting it many years later I loved it too. If SGU was made today in the streaming era, it would have been huge.

I even got a kick out of Stargate infinity, which has a hilarious/amazing theme song.

The less said about Stargate Origins, the better. It's like a fan film and not a good one.

The problems with later seasons of Atlantis ( which ended after 5 seasons) and Universe, the writers ( that all worked for SG-1 initially) probably had no more new stuff to give us. I guess that having a third spinoff ( SGU) caused the Franchise to grow thin. they were getting farther than what SG-1 was all about: sending people to other planets with conventional weaponry ( a p-90 is hardly an alien technology, it's Belgian) and try fending for themselves.

This part of realism in the other version was starting to get rare.

I would've maybe settled to have maybe two more seasons of Atlantis with some adapted stories from SGU.

err... by version I would rather say spinoffs. sorry I,m a good writer in English and I speak it well, but I usually speak french

You can still have realism, even without conventional weapons and giant spaceships. Just look at Star Trek. The future, futuristic weapons, computers, warp speed, but stories were still able to be told because of setting limitations on technology, the use, foes, structural hierarchy of the Federation, etc. Granted TOS got things confused, contradicted itself, but that was then. A new Stargate show can have the spaceship, weapons, but still have limitations, conflict between crew, conflict between crew and other races. Look what "Firefly" did in just one episode: a fire about a small ship and what happens -- an entire episode, but it's the future and in a spaceship.

What I meant here, by realism is not using future technology unless you have too.

If we get back to trek, the Doctor's Holoemitter is cool, but that was just to be able to give Robert picardo more freedom to roam around.

Technically speaking this is an anachronism they use a tech that was 400 ish years too early.

When you have a series (Stargate) that relies on alien technology, that utilizes theoretically science, goes to non existent alien planets, encounters and battles non existent alien species, encounters and even uses fanciful alien technology as the plot requires, and re-visions history to be made by aliens, I think the ship has long since sailed on realism.

I see what you mean, but hey maybe we did had a ring lime that buried in Gizeh.... who knows?

Indeed.

Even Stargate Infinity and Stargate Origins? :vulcan:;) I'm a huge SG fan, but I won't touch those!

As much as I loved Stargate, I think it would be really difficult to create a new series that captures the feeling and the fun of SG-1. Part of the allure was that it's set in the current-day world, but with the insane tech progression they had over the years (ships, weapons, etc), it's barely connected anymore. At this point, it may as well be a Star Trek reskin.
this our time aspect made the usual suspects for scifi (males!) part of the show (if i only hadn't f*cked up my education i could be out there right now) - the concept of upducted terrans made for cheap alians and the pontering of the erich von däniken nonsense got the esoterics - the best concept in scifi ever!

Since I actually work in aerospace, seeing Prometheus, Daedalus, and the F-302s being designed, built, tested, and fielded all within a couple years really strained my suspension of disbelief!
come on, the UNITED STATES AIRFORCE did it

That's even less likely. Though Kurt Russell has always been generally positive about Stargate, James Spader hated the movie and claims he only did it to make ends meet during a lull in his career.
yeah, spader with or without a wig makes everything work today, right?

I like Stargate SG-1, but it went on for far too long. Atlantis is fun too. Universe is awful. I recently tried to watch it again, and I couldn't make it through the first season. It's not fun.

the ori seasons are basicly a new (and in my pov stupid) show

They should have ended SG1 after season 8. I wonder why they didn't. As much as I like Browder and Black, the series was done in season 8.

There were things I liked about the Ori story though.

i love claudia black but the ori are as nuts as the wraith

what would be ideas for maybe a soft reboot? new insights for existing characters? a different angle on O'Neill, Carter et al.

Make it a NATO force rather than just USAF?

but then , we could go on the dangerous path of series revival that happened back in the 2000's with Galactica and KR2008...

what would be correct was sending a reinforced battalion with strikers and stingers through that bloody gate - it's military scifi for god's sake. show me a general who'd send 4-12 personnel. as a m1 abrams is properly too fat for the gate get a couple of m552 sheridans from museums.

if you find that general they need to get fired on the spot.

... i do know why they didn't do it that way and i love sg1 I-VIII but i need a rant once in a while - a stug III from the 2nd world war would fit through the gate and those jaffas wouldn't like that at all.

Woah woah woah!!!

I do not have the official diameter of the gizeh gate there, but maybe a humvee or maybe an APC could go through? I mean puddle jumpers seems to have a lot of room and are able to go through gates..

a humwee with a .50 cal would certainly make these jaffas mad (and dead)

eta:

the diameter is 6,7 meters

- source -

That figure is wrong. It was old hearsay that mutated over the years. There’s a lot of inaccurate stuff on that wiki.

The SG-1 and Atlantis stargates have an outer diameter of exactly 20 feet (6.1 m), and an inner diameter of exactly 15 feet (4.6 m).

thx, that was what i found on the quick. 4.6 meters certainly rules out an m1. but by posting my source i kept it kinda correct.

puddle jumpers may suffer from the tardis disease

but why on earth would the ancients build their stargates to yet to be invented british meassurements? if i were in charge of that stuff i'd invent ancient meassurements and have dr jackson figure those meassurements out in series III (maybe IV) :vulcan:
