What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

There was never a Klingon neutral zone in TOS, the idea there was one probably arose from the Franz Joseph Technical Manual where an “Organian Treaty Zone” appears that’s essentially the same as the Romulan one. Although, there was some speculation back in the day that part of the Kobayashi Maru test’s surprise was being attacked by Klingons inside of Romulan territory.

If you can convince me that Meyer or Bennett knew what a Franz Joseph Technical Manual was I'll eat my hat.

What I suspect that they did know was that there was a Neutral Zone near Gamma Hydra. And that "Klingons" made more sense to a general audience than "Romulans" and that they had stock footage of Klingon ships and they were not going to explain The Enterprise Incident or why Romulans would be using Klingon ships.

So we get a Klingon neutral zone. And again in Star Trek VI.

Let's say that in the 22nd century a problem occurred with the Colonies, HUMAN Colonies...

This problem occurred because of Wayland Yutani Corporation...(place filler name (though not necessarily)), resulting in a mass death event, particularly affecting the surviving women, in particular their ability to have children. So, to be "terrible ", in terms of mass death, and infertility of women one percent. Meaning ninety-nine percent of women in the Colonies were just gone or, unable.

Not only one colony, but several.

To put it another way the Colonies needed to be reseeded, with viable new colonists. Leading to a 'frontier ' culture, in which women of necessity are highly protected.

Now those of you who are avid Alien franchise watchers and predator watchers, will understand where I am coming from.

Because the full details never became public this corporation was never held accountable. At least for that.

Somebody knew at some point. The bridge displays use images from FJ's Tech Manual. This actually caused turmoil between Roddenberry and FJ (and estate). FJ was not credited, permission to use the images not given, and no compensation made.

Why Did Roddenberry Hate the "dreadnought" from the Starfleet Technical Manual?

Don't know if this is the right forum. If I've made a mistake sorry. I've heard for years that Gene Roddenberry did not like Franz Josephs Starfleet Technical Manual, in large part due to the inclusion of the "dreadnought" among the additional original series era ship designs. The other...

This is close to what I read actually happened. They originally were going to be Romulans and the Kobyashi Maru setting was the Romulan Neutral Zone. Harve Bennett decided Klingons were more popular, so went with them. Coincidentally (or I mixed the stories up) the same thing happened with TSFS.

Janice Lester was crazy and unhinged. I don't think she can be considered a reliable narrator of the times.

(And besides, the whole 'your world of starship captains' dialogue almost certainly refers to how captains are married to the job and don't allow room for a relationship. We've seen multiple examples of this throughout the franchise.)

The "married" mention reminded me of a peeve I have with shows. This doesn't only apply to Trek, but I'd like to see more truly happily married couples as part of the main cast. But that rarely happens because it doesn't make for good drama, or at least it's really difficult for the writers to make it work. O'Brien was kinda happy, but Keiko only seemed to show up when crap happened. Tom & B'Elanna were happy too, but entire decks could hear when they weren't. (Also when they were really happy, but that's different. )

I got reminded of all this when watching some NCIS reruns about Palmer's wedding. He and his wife seemed really happy together, very supportive of each other, and was about the only "normal" relationship on the show. And then they !$!*%!@#* killed her off!

This is how I always understood Lester's rant. Kirk's world was consumed by being a starship captain and he made no room for long term relationships.

The O'Briens were more than just "kinda" happy, but we didn't often see that because a loving couple doesn't usually make great drama. Time's Orphan showed them being a good team.
