Spoilers All Things STAR WARS - News, Speculation & Spoilers Thread

Droids was probably opposite to something else that was pretty on Saturday morning. There were still only a few stations even in 1985.

That's true. I could likely have been watching Scooby Doo or who knows what instead on another channel. Was it on at the same time as the Alf cartoon and Punky Brewster cartoon? I know I watched both of those as well.

The "The Ewoks and Droids Adventure Hour" was opposite "Muppet Babies" and "Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n Wrestling" on CBS, and the "Smurfs" and "Its Punky Brewster" on NBC. (over the course of the 1985-86 season)

ABC also was moving when the "Ewoks/Droids Adventure Hour" was from Fall, Winter, and Spring, probably to get away from those rival shows. In March they might have managed to get a half-hour of it in to a spot with the other networks doing reruns of "Richie Rich" (CBS) and "Alvin and the Chipmunks" (NBC), but it was likely too late by then.

In 1986-87 ABC has just "The All New Ewoks" for a half-hour ("Droids" was gone). It was against "The Puppy's Great Adventure", "Richie Rich", "CBS Storybreak", (CBS) and "Foofur", and "Its Punky Brewster" (NBC).

Some of the characters and concepts created for both shows would show up later in both Legends and the current Canon. Same with the live action Ewoks stuff.

For example, an episode of The Droids cartoon had a planet named Boonta where the Boonta Speeder Race happened. Probably inspired the Boonta Eve Classic podrace in TPM, or at the very least the name of the race.

In the Legends expanded lore created after the prequels, the Boonta Speeder Race was an alternative to the Boonta Eve Race that Humans could race in. As mentioned in TPM, Humans normally couldn't compete in the Boonta Eve, Anakin could do it because he was subconsciously using the force to help.

So far the Boonta Speeder Race has not been mentioned in the current canon, but the planet has.
I believe the Ewoks comic from earlier this year had the characters from the series and one of the other alien races on it's version of Endor.
I wasn't born yet when Ewoks and Droids originally aired, but I did watch the first few episodes of Droids on Disney+ a little while back. It was pretty good, but nowhere near the quality of the modern animated series. I was thinking about going back to it and checking out Ewoks, but the episodes of Droids I watched aren't marked on Disney+ anymore and I can't remember where I left off. So I might start off with Ewoks once I finish rewatching Season 2 of Rebels.

I have fond memories of watching 'Ewoks' on TV as a kid, both the cartoon and 'Battle for Endor' (I didn't see 'Caravan of Courage' until it came out on DVD), but I have a lot of affection for 'Droids' especially. I had 'The White Witch' arc and 'The Great Heap' special on VHS and watched them both countless times.

Indeed I still consider them "canon if you squint a bit", at least for my head-canon anyway. Honestly it works pretty well if you reframe their adventures as scouting missions for Fulcrum in the early years of the Rebellion; meaning Artoo as ever knows what he's doing, but Threepio is in the dark and genuinely thinks they're being constantly abandoned, sold and traded between masters.
I also like the idea that it's teen Daniel Logan Boba Fett that got into a speeder race to chase a target, and earned his stripes with Jabba by bringing in Sise Fromm instead. It would also track if many of the A-Wings Bail acquired were donated by Tammuz-an.

Not that it matters overmuch, but it does irk me a little how the lore of the show got warped a little in translation to other media (most of it stemming from a magazine article of all things.) For example; the intent of the show was clearly that Ingo and Annoo were in the same system (they literally loose their hyperdrive before travelling from one to the other for repairs), but other media has them in entirely different sectors.
Also, not a fan of the retroactive renaming of Kea's ship to "The Sand Sloth". Maybe it's just me, but "The Star Runner" is a much better name. Even if that's just the ship's model and it doesn't have a specific name, that's fine! It works for the Razor Crest, so why not? Not everyone has to name their car! Plus Kea's mother keeps actual sand sloths on her ranch. It'd be like a farm kid naming a boat "The Cow". It's weird.

Well, unfortunately that's never stopped Star Wars before. I give you: Empire, TLJ, Mandalorian.
As to why this keeps happening: it looks like some people ( unfortunately including content creators ) think that the purpose of warp/hyperspace/whatever is for when you want to get to another star system really fast because time is of the essence for some reason. Not getting that you need warp or hyperspace just to get there at all.

or in other words: :brickwall:

I disagree this is the sort of thing we need AI for. Sure it looks imperfect as does some cgi but as a tool for fun little fan works it really opens doors for people to create things that are otherwise impossible.

My only real concern here is the unauthorized use of the likeness of the actors. That said, the Pandora's box of AI has been well and truly opened. The apple has been plucked from the tree. Trying to avoid it in the future would be like trying to unbreak an egg.

Could one not make that argument of any piece of fan art? Digital replication or hand made is technically still using someone's image without their permission. Short of deciding all fan art is "theft" of likeness for lack of a better term is the medium all that important? Some companies like Nintendo definitely dislike all fan works.

It is far from perfect, but it is not a lazy effort. Some scenes don't work, all need at least some improvement, but others, especially those involving the Sir Alec facsimile, but also some of the young Hamill facsimile as well, succeed to an extraordinarily impressive degree, conveying the intended emotions without getting mired in the uncanny valley. As a proof of concept, this work establishes beyond doubt that it is technically possible, if not to bring animation to life, then to render animated likenesses of people in a lifelike manner, especially in the context of a fictional motion picture. It's not here yet, it's not yet fully realized, there's still a lot of work to do, but it's coming.

It takes skill to replicate a person's likeness by hand. This is not that. There's no creativity, or inspiration, or anything transformative. It's taking someone else's work, defacing it and claiming it as one's own. It's inherently and irrevocably
lazy. It's corrosive to all creative endeavours. To claim it as "art" let alone fanart is at best profoundly ignorant, and at worst a grievous insult to all actual artists. That it also happens to be disproportionately damaging to the environment just adds injury to insult.

Speaking as someone that used to openly share their fanart, and even took a commission from time to time; I find this crap to be extremely offensive, and wholly without merit.

You want to see a picture and don't have the talent to make it yourself? Too bad. Art takes skill and discipline. If you can't do it yourself, then commission an actual artist and they'll happily make it for you.
