Spoilers ST Strange New Worlds - Starships and Technology Season Three Discussion

Why not a Saladin or Hermes class?
Because then, the Franz Joseph estate would likely have sued Paramount into the stone ages while they're still trying to get their boat-legs going post-merger with Skydance.

They've already been playing it a little dangerous, between the use of the two-headed UFP logo in DSC and the Federation-Not-Federation-class Dreadnaught models in PIC. Now is not the time to upset the litigious apple cart, as it were.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the tech in the finale, since like the plot, a lot of it seems pretty arbitrary (it's character driven, that's fine, but it was REALLY magical this week when it comes to the tech). All the same:

- You can't tell me two mind-melded people are better than a a computer at keeping in sync. You're literally adding reaction time between the two ships, even if minimized. And the Captain of the Farragut is Vulcan, why not go for her for an even more seamless experience?

- The gang dresses down for a landing party, but why do some of them bother to completely redo their hair color AND length? It's not like they're any more recognizable, and none of the women keep military hairdos anyway. (My guess is that they wanted to let everyone out of their wigs for fun this week).

- So Ley Lines are a thing in Trek now. I suppose this COULD dovetail into assorted ways to get between worlds via space or time or thought. Or portals.

- It's not like it's a REAL thing (or is it?) but the future fiance is wearing the exact cadet uniform styling as Uhura did in SNW S1, the only other time it's seen, suggesting it's still in use for more than a couple decades - close to a Fleet record, perhaps.

I was wondering about that. They didn't mention any dates, but it should've been after 2280 (the episode is set in '61, Pike and Batel's daughter would have to be born after that, plus 20 years or so), so I would've expected it to be the red-dyed TMP jumpsuits from TWOK. Or, since they probably didn't have any lying around (it's been 20 years since the last time they pulled one out of the closet for NEM), future-Pike's monster maroon variant from the season 1 finale with a red turtleneck and trim might've worked to suggest he was a recent or near-graduate. IIRC, the Starfleet Academy computer game did that, with the opening and closing cutscenes showing the officer uniforms (sans rank pins and delta shield) as the cadet dress uniform.

Or we can take it as an indication that it was pulled mostly from Pike and Batel's imaginations and wasn't a real alternate future that could include things they'd have no way of predicting or knowing about. Well, Pike knew what the uniforms looked like in the '80s in general, but it probably wouldn't be top-of-mind in terms of his dream-logic.

3.22 × 10^26 Watts is what was needed to open that StarGate / Portal thingy that the Vezda Life Form used.

Each Phaser Beam was Ball Park close to ½ the Output of Earth's Sun.

2x 23rd Century StarFleet StarShip Phaser Beams in perfect Synchronicity can Generate that kind of power

Jeebus, the power creep introduced into SNW.

For Reference:
The luminosity of the Sun is about 3.86 x 10 ^26 watts. This is the total power radiated out into space by the Sun.

Also, the latency for Synchronized Flying via Vulcan Mind Meld / Telepathic Link is superior than Voice over COMM's links.

After the whole thing with Control and Section 31 just a few years back I would think Star Fleet would be really against computer control between starships. The M5 computer in a few years was suppose to be a better idea, but it still gave them a whole load of problems.

This is why you NEVER / EVER should give Computers Full Control.

You always need "Man in the Middle" & have "People be the ones to make the Final Decisions".

Computers should help, do things that are boring & repetitive to us regular people, but it can't be the "be-all / end-all of everything".

That's why the future is (Man + Machine working together), not (Man or Machine, with one taking over the entire operation).
