I think she gave Desmond the boat so he would go on the race at Widmore's behest, and that the whole point of the race is him hoping one of the "racers" stumbles upon the island.

I actually don't miss Libby that much. A lot of people here were upset at Libby's death, but I didn't really mind it. She never did much for me as a character...kind of boring really. To see her story would have been nice, but I have a feeling that will be explained in the future, so I don't count it as something to miss about her being gone. I tried to feel interested in her but I'm just not.

That's the assumption that exsists with Libby, Ana-Lucia, and I believe Eko too. But there's little evidence to support it besides coincidence.

Libby actually was eliminated for a good reason. Ana-Lucia was a bitch who nobody cared if she really died or not, but throw Libby into the mix, and it gives some shock value and its also a catalyst for Hurley to follow Michael back to the pier.
