Based only on events up to the end of Voyager, what could happen to all Voyager main characters after the ship got home (also in alternate timelines)?

BohandiAnsoid

Captain
Captain
I know recent Star Trek productions told us what happened with some of the Voyager characters after the ship returned home. However, since there are alternate timelines in Star Trek and because of that, I would like to ask you this.

What can happen to the main Voyager characters after the ship returned home? What career path could they take?

OK, here we go. I will follow official "canon" and later information from "Relaunch Books" and such as much as possible. But I've also taken the liberty to sort out a few mistakes made by those who wrote the episodes for the series. :techman:

JANEWAY: Became a Starfleet Admiral but used to command Voyager on special missions.

CHAKOTAY: Became captain on Voyager

PARIS: Remained as the pilot on Voyager.

TORRES: remained as the Chief Engineer on the ship.

TUVOK: Was sttationed on Riker's ship for a while but returned to Voyager later on.

SEVEN: She started a new life in the Alpha Quadrant, first as a Fenris Ranger and later officially joining Starfleet. Have returned to Voyager

KIM: He was promoted to Lieutanant after coming back to Earth and continued to be OPS officer on Voyager.

THE DOCTOR: Was transferred to the Jupiter station where he did serve for some time but was returned to Voyager on Janeway's request.

KES: Was restored by Q from being an energy being to an Ocampa with a human lifespan. Joined a Maquis crew which was also lost in the Delta Quadrant and traveled with them to Federation space. She settlöed down on a planet in the area between bajor and the Tzenkethi Alliance where she maintains a garden but sometimes go on journeys in space to learn and explore.

NEELIX: Left Voyager in 2377 and settled on an asteroid in the middle of nowhere with other Talaxians. Got tired of the boring life there and with the help of his old friend Wixiban found a species which had created a sort of Slipstream drive. Together with Wixiban and the family he adpoted on the asteroid, he managed the Slistream drive to travel to the Alpha Quadrant where he started a restarurant on station Deep Space Nine.

Janeway's fate is pretty set, since her promotion to admiral became canon moments after Voyager's return. There was no time for alternative ideas to form.

Ironically, the fate for Chakotay that made the most sense to me didn't happen: I saw him as a professor of anthropology at Starfleet Academy, specializing in Delta Quadrant species.

Tuvok's fate in "The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway" made sense to me. He continues to serve, but you get the sense that he will be returning to his family on Vulcan soon. He's a logical man, but you see the deep love for his family shining through the cracks of his logic.

The fate for Tom that made the most sense to me was the one we saw in "Endgame", where he turned his interests to creative pursuits.

B'Elanna would have taken to Starfleet engineering and ship design division like a fish to water. My head canon is that the protostar drive and the working quantum slipstream drive were both products of hers.

Harry's fate is easy to deduce. There is no intelligent reason for him to have remained an ensign upon Voyager's return, which is why his canonical fate will probably never be revealed. Too many fans get a twisted pleasure from the notion of him being an ensign forever, and the powers that be have opted to accommodate them. But I expect that "Autobiography" was accurate in his case as well: he was promoted to lieutenant by Janeway immediately after the series ended, and rose rapidly through the ranks afterward.

The Doctor likely remained with Janeway, at her insistence and tonprotect him from the fate of the other Mark I's. He remained an advocate for the rights of sentient holograms.

Seven's fate in PIC makes as much sense as anything else.

Assuming Kes was on-board after 7 years, she probably spent her remaining few months of life exploring Earth the surrounding areas, before reaching her morilogium and dying peacefully, surrounded by her adopted family.

Neelix, had he traveled back home with Voyager, probably had his brains picked by Starfleet regarding the people of the Delta Quadrant. Once the quantum slipstream drive made Delta Quadrant travel more normal, he became Starfleet's ambassador to Talaxia.

Honestly, my suggestions are better but I won't go into details now. :)

As for Janeway, is this Autobiograpy of Kathryn Janeway much different to Mosaic which Jeri Taylor wrote during season 2 of Voyager. Are there any contradictions between those stories?

Mosaic may have some flaws but I rather stick to the story in that one, no matter what.

My reasons for that is that The Autobiography Of Kathryn Janeway turned several of the characters, including the captain herself into downrigth parodies, not to mention that I've promised to buy a book by the author who ruined and killed off Garak.

As for that "Quantum Slipstream Drive", when was it invented and who invented it?

I went with "Autobiography" where Harry was concerned, because it seemed like the perfect slap across the face to the "poor dumb eternal ensign Kim" crowd. Basically, minutes after the show ends, as Voyager is cruising toward Earth, Janeway promotes Harry to lieutenant. And to add to the insult, he rockets up through the ranks, gains his own command, and reconciles with Libby.

Sadly, the Kurtzman crew have decided to indulge the Forever Ensign crowd, as seen in those ridiculous ensign clones on LD. But I'll take Captain Kim any day of the week.

Took some very slight liberties by including PIC, but otherwise stuck to the assignment.

Janeway: Becomes vice admiral and overseas the development of several new weapons and defenses meant to fight the Borg, but becomes useful against other enemies of the Federation, including the Fen Domar. Becomes a time cop after being recruited by Ducane and is lost through time, though it allows her to reunite with Mark for a time.

Chakotay: Romantic relationship with Seven ends upon Voyager’s return to Earth. End up in a romantic relationship with Tessa Omond. Resigns his Starfleet commission. Tessa fate is what Seven’s fate was in PIC – a part of the Fenris Rangers and later comes into ownership of La Sirena from Cristobal Rios, gets revenge for loss of adoptive son, an on/off romantic relationship with Raffi Musiker, a friendship with Agnes Jurati, receives a field commission from Admiral Picard while on the Stargazer and serves under Liam Shaw on the Titan-A, and later captains a future iteration of the Enterprise - until she dies, leaving Chakotay heartbroken until he dies.

Tuvok: His degenerative neurological disease is cured. He stays in Starfleet and serves on DS9 for a time as their new chief of security. He also goes on to have a series of debates with Ambassador Spock over Federation policy over the last century, meaning Tuvok spends a great deal of time in and around Romulan space.

B’Elanna: Perfects the Quantum Drive, revolutionizing space travel in the Federation. Becomes the Federation liaison to the Klingon Empire, who acquire the Quantum Drive from their ally in a series of tech exchanges.

Tom: Gets a medal for creating the Delta Flyer, which becomes the definitive shuttle for the Federation. Engages in creative pursuits. Attracts the attention of Grand Nagus Rom and First Clerk Leeta after he (or B’Elanna) punches out Quark while visiting DS9 to see Tuvok. Later remarries and has another daughter after B’Elanna dies.

Doctor: An activist for holographic rights. Becomes the template for a number of emergency holograms (command, engineering, tactical, hospitality, etc.) used throughout Starfleet. Marries a human and adopts a name comprised of his wife’s father name and a historical composer (ex. Joe Van Gogh or Joe Mozart). Looks after the health of the Voyager crew by making house calls across the Alpha and Beta Quadrant. Endeavours in creative pursuits of his own on a much larger scale than Tom as both a writer and a singer. Also deals with his unrequited love for Seven of Nine.

Harry: Reassigned to Earth in the Starfleet Corps of Engineers as a starship design specialist, utilizing his knowledge from his time on Voyager to create brand new starship classes for Starfleet. Reunites with Libby and gets engaged to her, and Libby briefly considered joining Starfleet to join Harry on his upcoming four-year mission. But Libby leaves him for another Starfleet engineer based on Earth after its upgraded to an eight-year mission, not wanting to go through what she went through with Harry’s absence again. Harry gets married to another woman, possibly to someone in Starfleet in the sciences division, and has a son with her (I’m not sure about Harry marrying having a child with Miral Paris, though I could buy Miral marrying Harry’s son at some point in the future). Harry continually gets promoted over the years and becomes captain of the USS Rhode Island and goes on his eight-year mission. He later resigns his Starfleet commission and joins up with Chakotay looking for lost starships.

Seven: Is intensively studied by Starfleet. Accepts an invitation to be Barclay’s date to Riker and Troi’s wedding (makes more sense than her going with Geordi :nyah:), which later leads to her serving on the Titan. Later oversees the integration of Borg tech throughout Starfleet, which leads to her ending up in a long term romantic relationship with Raffi. Meets her end after an encounter with the Fen Domar after revisiting the DQ.

Neelix: Raises his adopted Talaxian family and tell tales about Voyager to all passerbys. If he lives long enough, he welcomes the expansion of Starfleet into the DQ in the late 25th century, and is later honoured as an honorary Federation ambassador.

Kes: Has a daughter named Linnis with someone from a parallel Earth world in the DQ. Dies with family around her.

Naomi: Reunited with her father on DS9. Serves in Starfleet, rising to the rank of lieutenant and on either the engineering or security track. Has a daughter named Sabrina.

Icheb: Serves in Starfleet. Rises to the rank of lieutenant commander and on the command track. Regularly bailed out of tough situations by Q2.

I haven't seen it for myself, but I read that a screen display in Prodigy showed Harry Kim was promoted by that show's time.
The character was reportedly supposed to be a part of PRO, though when is unknown. In any case, they had 20 episodes of Season 2, and he wasn't even mentioned. Given their active decision to delete him from Picard, and to limit his LD exposure to alternate versions... it's clear that his canonical fate is intended to remain unknown... probably because so many people take a twisted pleasure in him being stuck at ensign, the Trek powers that be are afraid to promote him in canon.

They should formally establish that Harry is still an Ensign just for the memes. Or maybe only just be making Lieutenant Junior Grade at age 60. He can think he's getting promoted to full Lt. but then get annoyed.

There was a whole episode of Lower Decks about this, with the Harry Kim multiverse and them all being in awe of the one that was actually promoted.

As for the OP, I was heavily into the novels at the time, so my headcanon was what happened there.

But then, that would piss off the people who thought he got a raw deal. So rather than create a canon fate, they endlessly keep Harry in limbo.

But given that he's been an ensign for 31 years (or about 28 years longer than a merely competent officer should have been), and all the 24th century era Treks have ended... I think your memes are safe.

That allowed them to have Garrett Wang appear, but keep Harry's canonical fate in limbo. Effectively, he's Schrödinger Harry. As long as the box is shut, he's an ensign and a lieutenant at the same time.

Certainly. We see several in canon.
- Non Sequitur. Had that timeline proceeded uninterrupted, Harry would have been a lieutenant 8 months after graduation.
- Timeless. We don't see Harry's rank, but it's a safe bet he was promoted.
- Before and After. Harry's a lieutenant.
- Endgame. Harry's a captain.

Plus, he's a captain in STO, and was slated to be a captain in Picard. And I'm pretty sure that no post-VOY novel keeps him at ensign, while quite a few promote him. He's immediately upped to lieutenant in "Homecoming", and has his own command in "Autobiography". The only place where he's an ensign post-VOY is in the several million memes about him.

At least one positive thing with that book.

But Harry was actually promoted to Lieutenant in the book Homecoming by Christie Golden, at a "welcome home banquet" after they arrived to Earth. I think I'll stick to that version.

I really like the early Voyager books from seasons 1-3, especially books like The Black Shore by Greg Cox and Marooned by Christie Golden. But all of the books from that period are very good and there are several books with stories which could have been great TV episodes.

I did lose the interest in the books when Kes "disappeared", I was hoping that she would return in some book but nothing really happened. There were some good intentions in some books but nothing more.

I read some of the Voyager Relaunch books but lost interest when Christie Golden quit and Janeway was killed off (but late brought back) and I didn't like how the successor to Christie Golden killed off the character Lyssa Campbell who Golden had created in the book Marooned. It looked too much like a cheap shot to me.

As it is now, I've more and less given up on TrekLit. Too much character destruction.

Why are people so mean to Harry?
I agree with Oddish's quote below. People can be real d***s sometimes. I still remember the cheap shots at Jennifer Lien and the character Kes on several forums after she'd been booted out from Voyager.

Why do people join in bullying the targeted kid instead of standing up for them? People are dicks sometimes.
Yes, I agree on that.

To be honest, I'm not totally without sin here. I've had some comments on Harry in the past, about him being the "whipping boy" of the show (and even in some books) or some jokes about "Duplicate Son".

But it had more to do with the role he was put in by those in charge of the show than the character itself. The original purpose with Harry was obviously that he should be a sort of whizz kid when it came to computers and such, in some of the books he really is that. That was a concept which those in charge of the show should have developed.

I'm his biggest advocate, and I'm not without sin either. https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/wheres-my-box-a-short-story-with-5-endings.305612/

That's too bad. There was never anything wrong with Harry or Kes as characters... just how they were used.

Along with everyone else on the ship, including the two guys who were promoted before. Having him promoted by Janeway just moments after the series ends not just sends a message, it delivers a big degrading slap across the face to Rick Berman, "someone gotta be duh ensign", and every "Harry the forever ensign" meme maker on the planet.

Still, some of the alternate endigs were quite plausible.

However, you missed Ending 6, the one where janeway reveals that her dislike of Kim was because he didn't listen to or approciate the music of Iron Maiden. I mean, even Kes got a promotion despite not being on the ship after the return to the Alpha Quardant.

Sorry Harry, this is the reason why I was promoted and not you!

No, that was a rude joke from me. But the sad truth is that even such an explanation about musical taste would have been more believable than just ignoring him for seven long years.

That's too bad. There was never anything wrong with Harry or Kes as characters... just how they were used.
Ah, you should have been around here in the late 90's and early 2000's, not to mention the discussion forum on the startrek.com site. That was not a nice place, to say the least.

Honestly, I was terrible too back then in my defence for the character, I admit that.

Also remember the hatred when it came to Wesley Crusher. It looks like some people must have someone to hate and ridicule.

That's true. :techman:

As for the comment that, "someone's got to be duh ensign", there were actually a whole bunch of ensigns on the ship, like Samantha Wildman, Hogan, Baytart, Vorik and many more so there were obviously many "someone" who did fit that description.
