What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Controversial opinion: Just watched Section 31 movie. It is NOT the worst Trek ever made.

(I'd rank it in the bottom quarter, but ahead of some episodes of each series, except SNW--it's not ahead of any of that series' episodes thus far).
Haven't seen it but I also find it being the worst Star Trek content ever made hard to believe. Maybe the worst movie if it's counted as one but the worst of Voyager, Enterprise, and TOS season 3 contain some truly abysmal stuff

Damn, more than 60 years later the very first Enterprise bridge design from the first pilot still looks damn good. In some ways better than the regular series TOS bridge. The metallic and grey colors work so well with the vibrant, colorful console displays.

Ehh, I suppose it's less "dated" because aesthetics are more boring today than the 60's, but I love all the color on the TOS bridge. A little red would have made the TNG bridge so much better. I do prefer the early turtleneck uniforms though to what they ended up doing.

I will say it. It looks better than the modern modern version of it on SNW. Not only does it look great it looks practical and functional .

The Cage set wouldn't fool anyone into thinking it wasn't built in the 60s, but being practical and functional really does help with the verisimilitude.

Part of the problem I have with the flashy modern bridges is that I struggle sometimes to buy that people would design a ship like that. Not that I have a problem with them showing off some post-scarcity Starfleet style, but in some ways they look more like beautiful expensive (and very large) science fiction sets instead of a place that people go to work. I want to feel like I'm on a starship in space, not a soundstage in Canada.

I agree. Everything looks to sleek IMO. The submarine look really does hold up best in these kind of situations IMO. Also the ship is already old enough that it should look more lived in. Also their doesn't need to be lights everywhere.

I like how there appears to be more going on with the overhead displays above each station. They always seemed so static in the main run.

The bridge for the pilot episode, was fantastic

And I am developing a new theory about Duotronic systems...

Perhaps, some of you guys might like to start screaming??

Not all that moved by the OTOY stuff. Appreciate the technology, though.

Pick up your torches on the left and pitchforks on the right.

I find the work technically impressive.

Unification though... For me it was a series of characters looking at each other doe-eyed, before opening their mouths a little to say something, only to decide not to.

Beyond a technical level, I found it to be trite and irritating more than anything else. Tedious even.

So torches and pitchforks for me too.

Overall I like it but still had a 60s vibe. Which is fine as the Cage is one of my favorite episodes of Star Trek. It definitely captures something.

I think I have to disagree. While there are certainly episodes of each that are, say, more crudely made or written, I don’t think any stray quite so far into “let’s desperately and loudly jump up and down pretending we’re a good James Gunn movie, and fail!” territory.

Say what you will about Unification, It has currently racked up over 28 million views on YouTube.

There are videos of cats tearing up curtains on Youtube that have received more views. The amount of eyes something attracts is by no means a way to judge it qualitatively.

Not that I'd say anyone is wrong to like it or that they don't, but it did absolutely zero for me emotionally.

Well, I did say to say what you will about the video, but you must realize that this is an unlisted video. Meaning it's not going to go viral in the traditional sense, it's not going to randomly show up on your feed and you're not even going to find it on a search. It's only available by a direct link. None of that can be said about your average cat video.

I've felt that the bridge sets on Disco and SNW, not to mention all the sets, were ridiculously large. How the hell would people interact when they are so far away from one another? Well, Gates McFadden actually said that the actors can't hear each other most of the time when speaking. They need to rely on other cues or trust their fellow actors.

I find that the big wrap-around screen they use now for sets to be a detriment. All the actors look like they are trying to find their car after a ball game.

Big mistake on modern Trek design when it comes to ships. They think scope is important when I think small and lived in is best. The one exception would be the hangar deck. I would love it if they let the ship show it's age. Planets and alien cities etc is where we see lots of scope. Something I do like about modern Trek. Alien planets can now be more than a single room or another underground base in a cave so they can use the cave set.

Why? Because the actors can actually see what's there?

Where are you seeing this? Most of the bridge is a physical set, isn't it? The only regular set that is probably more virtual than not would be engineering, right? And whatever I think of how it fits in the ship, it's gorgeous. (Just looked. There's rather a lot of "real" on the engineering set as well.)

Now a brewery. THAT was a physical location and the actors were totally believable there.

It has a built-in, worldwide, multi-generational fanbase, many of whom will watch multiple times. It doesn't need to be listed. It's Star Trek, made by a well known Star Trek channel who've spend years building up goodwill and subscribers. It doesn't need to go viral in a traditional sense.
