The James Bond Film Discussion Thread (With Bonus Lazenby!)

As promised, I finally watched No Time to Die, and I'm having all the feelings right now. Daniel Craig and Léa Seydoux really brought their A-game to this film, which is good, because Safin's evil plan is just a high(er)-tech variation on Drax's plot from Moonraker, and Rami Malek's performance mostly came across as creepy. (Also, this is why I'm glad I never signed up for 23 and Me. :p ) The film's biggest strength is its emotional core, the relationships: Bond and Madeleine; Bond and the MI6 gang; Bond and Felix... I'm not sure who ultimately deserves the credit for that aspect of the story, but those relationships are what bound the Craig Era together for me. And that ending... when Madeleine and Mathilde drive off in the Aston Martin and Louis Armstrong's "We Have All the Time in the World" starts to play... I'm not ashamed to admit, I lost it. What an amazing way to end a film like that. :wah:

****½ out of *****

NTTD sits firmly in the middle of Craig's run for me (Skyfall, CR, NTTD, QoS, Spectre). There's a lot I like about it (the pre-title sequence, Cuba, Norway, the ending) and a lot I don't (nanotech again, Safin's actions making little sense once he got his revenge on Spectre, the length and pacing) but the good outweighs the bad for me at least.

It should have been better than it was, but it could have been much much worse so while it'll never be a top five Bond film, nor will it be a bottom five film.

Slow news day and it’s not so much that a pinch of salt is required but that he just spouts so much crap that some inevitably sticks, but Daniel Richtman (I know) claims that Aaron Pierre is one of the actors being considered for Bond.

Richtman just constantly repeats rumours, wishful thinking, etc, so that if some of these actually become true, he can claim credit. More likely than not, Pierre, being a handsome, young actor who can handle action and drama, is on some sort of shortlist or long list, but that’s probably as much as one can say.

There are obviously any number of young handsome British actors who could be at least audition-worthy and would probably be fairly competent Bonds, but finding one who has the edge that a Scottish former bodybuilder or a blond blue eyed brought may be more difficult.

I’ve been watching This City Is Ours and am wondering which category, if either, it’s lead, James Nelson-Joyce, would fall into. Physically, compared to previous Bonds, I’d say he’s closest to a mix of Dalton and Craig, but generally looks a bit more Richard Madden, mixed with Benedict Cumberbatch and a little Nicholas Hoult. He has a very strong Liverpool (which is close to where craig grew up, iirc) but most actors can do RP.

I think Amazon will probably go closer to the Brosnan/Lazenby classically handsome mould, but if they wanted someone with a little more intensity and danger, I would at least be curious to see his audition.

I'm really not sure. Admittedly I haven't seen him in much (The Gold, bits of This City is Ours and Black Mirror) Might be down to the roles but he comes across quite thuggish and angry and not at all suave.

I mean at the end of the day he's an actor so I'll try not to judge him too much on the roles he's played (I was almost today years old when I realised Rose Leslie was ridiculously posh in real life for example)

Given the time that's passed since NTTD and Craig left, and given the importance that might rest on the next film, I wonder if they'll play it safe or go all in on a radical choice?

There are people on social media who think that Amazon will be successful in theaters in 2026 by looking at the movies it will release in 'theaters' except for James Bond and Creed. Maybe a few of the movies it will release in 2026 will be successful. But most of them will fail at the box office. There are people who think that Apple's 200 million dollar F1 movie will be successful at the box office. The guy is a movie critic and doesn't have any website. He tells me 'some of us make predictions and some of us talk to them.' I said 'are you talking to Amazon and Apple in your dreams?' and finally blocked him.

Didn't the tRump administration in its first term, weaken or remove the protections in place that allowed movie studios to own their own movie theaters?
I'm surprised Amazon or Apple hasn't taken advantage of this and brought out a failing chain, or, bought up some smaller, independent movie houses and run movies from their MGM library.
They could do Bond or Pink Panther weeks, if the price point was reasonable. I'm sure there is an audience wanting to see the older Bond movies on the big screen again, that they never saw in the theater the first time.

Sony made a 'that' type of purchase. But Amazon and Apple can buy as many 'theater' chains as they want, unless they buy every cinema chain in the world, they may still have trouble at the box office.

The 28 ... Later franchise of course has multiple Bond link.

Naomie Harris is in the first film, Ralph Fiennes is in the third one, Danny Boyle directed the first and third and almost directed NTTD and Rose Byrne is in the second film and by all accounts came very close to playing Vesper in Casino Royale.

I liked him way more in 28 Weeks Later. Once you realize Renard is the henchman of TWINE and Elektra King the real villain then Renard becomes a little less interesting. Carlyle, however, kept my attention in Weeks.

Some rumours, rather than solid news here. Interestingly, if true, it seems that the priority is to get a script and director, then think about casting the actor to fill the tux and carry the PPK.

There is a logic to that, although as I've said before I think equally there's a logic to finding the right man and then deciding what kind of film suits him.

Given that outside of Connery the franchise has a bit of an issue with the difficult second film* for each Bond, I hope they're thinking beyond just the next film, especially if they're contemplating a linked storyline again, as in actually put some thought into it rather than reconning what went before with each subsequent film!

I'm still hoping for a return to a more standalone format myself though.

* YMMV, and certainly I have a lot of time for LTK and TND, and frankly may well be more of a fan of TMWTGG and QoS than many people, but on the whole I think the prevailing wisdom would be that no actor's second film outdoes their first (except for FRWL obviously).

And I appreciate that for many people Licence to Kill is better than The Living Daylights and Tomorrow Never Dies is better than Goldeneye but I doubt the majority would agree.
