ST:SNW S03 - Official Trailer

Best (S3) trailer so far. Looks like 'Star Trek' with a lot of fun. (Previous one looked more like a comedy set in Star Trek verse, which... is also fine)
Thigh how much of that is the action (with the vfx shots just recently being finished), who knows. There seems to be a lot of that. Thigh I guess that will mostly translate to 2 or 3 episodes max.

I'm so over those "bewwwwww" noises in trailers now, it's like they put them in even when there's no point to it and no dramatic effect.

Seems to me They've added to the Gorn backstory quite well so far.
There's not really much to "stray" from, based on their appearance in just one TOS episode.
Other than the Gorn outward image being updated for the third time, nothing has really been changed from ARENA.

I reckon that you're right about that, it just feels different, which is likely just my own perception at work here. In 'Arena' it seemed as if they were encountering the Gorn for the first time, but again, it's been a spell since I last watched it.

That recollection likely comes from Kirk's line that Kirk had found himself up against a being that "the Metron called a 'Gorn'". It would infer a first encounter, but it's ambiguous enough to leave some wiggle room.

I would have written the Gorn backstory a bit differently...

Kirk encounters the Gorn captain on a moon where they were both comfortable with the o2 level, gravitational attraction, ambient temperature, and the Gorn bleeds red instead of another color. That implies their origin was on a world very similar to Earth.

The Gorn can use us as an egg host or for food. No apparent reaction to alien enzymes or allergens and their metabolism can process human flesh for sustenance. So can alligators and constrictors.

What if they were from here? What if they'd made it off Earth before the Chicxulub meteor impact?

Star Trek, as a franchise, just seems so damned insecure these days. Like the powers that be over-reacted to criticism of DSC and PIC being too serious and "grim dark," then saw the over-the-top fawning over products like The Orville and Lower Decks, and decided that what Star Trek should be is a borderline silly comedy.

SNW is starting to come off as "The Orville, but in the actual Star Trek universe." The problem with that is that The Orville was great because it was its own thing. Trying to re-capture that with SNW has just not worked for me.

Nah, there have been heavy hitting episodes as well. We're currently on a cliffhanger where half the characters are kidnapped by a monstruous alien species who use humans as living incubators, the Captain's girlfriend has been infected and the ship is outmanned and out gunned. Not a lot of yucks there. Past episodes include such laff riots as child sacrifice, prejudice and PTSD. Sure, the "comedy jokes" episodes might stick out in memory, but they aren't the meat of the show.

This recent trailer isn't full of wacky gags, either. Very much the action trailer with quick cuts to ships firing weapons, stern expressions and threating consequences. And yes it ended with a gag.

I think the difference to me is that SNW just feels "forced" and disingenuous. It doesn't feel like authentic character-driven humor. TOS excelled at that, so it could get away with it. SNW has forced, snarky "MCU" quips and gag episodes.

I like SNW and I'll watch every episode, but I have to be honest with my assessment that it's borderline ridiculous about 30-40% of the time. And it's frustrating because when it applies itself properly as a drama/action/adventure sci-fi, it does well.
