Spoilers Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

That sounds great to me!

I know right? (I also know I'd get bored if every episode was like that)

Still don't really see what Disney funding has done for Who. The Tardis and Unit sets are...bigger? Other than that, most of the stories, Boom, Dot and Bubble for example, look like they'd fit right in with Who pre-Disney.

And the Tardis set is a trifle pointless!

I think some effects have been better, the scope grander, and I guess if nothing else the Disney money probably meant the BBC has to spend less.

And co partnerships aren't a new thing, back in the 70s the BBC tried (and failed) to secure an American partner to partially fund Blake's 7

And they've already said, on-record, that the show will continue even without the extra money that the Disney Plus deal provided.

When will it continue? And, from the article I posted above, they said they wouldn't make a decision until after season 15 aired.

On Friday, the BBC repeated the line it has held for many months: no decisions will be made about a renewal until Season 15 has finished screening.

When will it continue?

Only the BBC can answer that question definitively, but if I had to hazard a guess, I'd predict that we'll see Doctor Who proper back on our screens sometime within the next two years, even if it's distributed Internationally by an entity that isn't Disney Plus.

Hope is a good thing, just make sure to temper it with common sense.

From what I've watched for a long time from this side of the pond, it usually isn't a good sign if the IP owner is publicly hedging their bets on how the current product does in regard to making more.

The BBC's noncommital answer about Series 16 in that article you posted is irrelevant because they've already separately confirmed that they'll continue to produce the show even without having Disney Plus as an International distributor.

Everything they said was the truth, until it wasn't.

Everything I’ve seen going back to October of last year, has the BBC saying that season 16 is dependent on how season 15 does.

Apparently there was an interview by Graham Norton with Ncuti, where Ncuti said there would be a season 16, which the BBC edited out and their responses starting at that point was that no decision had been made on season 16.

This stuff changes all of the time. God, look at Marvel's slate which has been in a state of flux for years.

I think The Mirror quoted a BBC source as saying they will want to keep going, but won’t until the Disney decision is made.

Basically, this is pretty much how the nineties played out, with the attempts to get an international deal tying up rights and whether or not it was a good idea to proceed while they were being shopped around. (Rumours are that’s what killed Dark Dimension as well)

In this case, we don’t know which bits of the family silver are on loan to Bad Wolf, or were given over as part of the production deal. Same is true for the other international rights deals — HBO allegedly would have had rights to these seasons under the old deal, but part of the rebranding to ‘season one’ instead of ‘series 14’ allegedly meant the Disney deal could go ahead. But then, also allegedly, the big sets were made for the anniversary specials (that weren’t that, let’s be honest, they were RTD specials) under BBC only money (and I imagine some Bad Wolf fundage) and only then did they get the big cheque.

Sounds like they may have tied their rights up in knots. Same way that Paramount has seemingly done with the Star Trek movies and Marvel did with the Spider-Man rights back in the 90’s.

I didn’t realize that the rights were split up here in the US. With MAX having the rights to the 2005-2022 stuff and Disney having the rights to the 2023-2025 stuff.

That could complicate things when it comes to selling to international markets, going forward.

The deal for NuWho to stream on MAX reportedly ends in August.
