The End of an Era: Discontinued products, services, and defunct companies

What I miss are Mom and pop stores, local music shops, especially those where you could get "rare" music like stuff from Japan etc, the just around the corner electronics shop where you could pick up headphones, 2.5 to 3.5mm audio jack converters, batteries, drool at the latest walkman etc.. Local bank offices, the ones where you actually could get money etc indeed with a good service..
So much has disappeared over the years, it's kinda really sad..
Was it all great and convenient? No, waiting a week or two before you got your desired motherboard for the 80486 you wanted to build or the 6 week wait for a CD coming from Japan, but still I miss that sort of stuff anyway, guess I miss a whole era.

Growing up, whenever we would go and visit the grandparents - they would give my brother and and I $5-$10 and say, "Go down to the corner store, pick up a six pack of beer, a pack of cigarettes and some candy for yourself."
No one ever questioned it.

I'm of two minds. I do miss them too, but the downsides I've had with such stores are sometimes the owners themselves. We had a fairly great local record store that had been in the business for years, but the owner was a bit of a prick. Went in there once to see if he had something others stores didn't, and I had him order it in. But it was not a great experience as he was looking down on me for my choice, and he'd said something to the effect of, "Now why would you want that?" That was my first and last time in there as he had made me feel like he didn't want my business and that my request was an imposition on him.

Del-Monte Foods has filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.
It will begin liquidating its assets in the coming days.
I can't remember the last time I bought a Del Monte product.
Probably back when my parents were still married.

Del-Monte was always a little pricier than the equivalent name brand. I tried them & they didn't seem any better than the other name brands on the same shelf. They were usually better than generics, tho.
