The Maple Leaf Lounge

And for now for something different.

Firearms might not be everyone's cup of tea but this one has Canadian historical ties.

In the middle of the 19th century, there was an organization called ithe fenian brotherhood which had ties to the ira and in favour of an independant Ireland.

So they hatched a plan to invade and seize control of Canada with the idea of trading it back to Britain in return for Ireland.

It didn't go well.

They were intercepted and their guns confiscated first time around, then came the U.S civil war and afterwards they got them back and had them converted to breach loaders and tried again with even less success.

at the risk of a mod smacking for spamming...

The liberals have flipped a riding in Quebec taking it from the bloc by the smallest margin possible margin - a single vote.

this was after judicial recount and that's the final option.

It leaves Carney two seats short of a majority.

might be a couple of bloc supporters who wish they'd turned out to vote.

I really hope Canada Post and CUPW can come to an agreement soon. I have no desire to go through the same kind of mess again now, as we did at the end of last year.

in this instance cupw can go screw it's self.

this isn't about the best deal for the workers, it's about the union and membership. There's no need to need to make the position for the saturday parcel delivery full time and frankly with the union demand Canada post could well just kill the the whole thing.

gas prices are right down so why it Canada Post still charging a fuel level? It's expensive enough to post stuff from North America as it.

sent maple syrup and other items off to my mum in Australia this morning. Box was 12"x9"x7 (roughly) weight 4.64kg. Shipping was $164 and the was a a $20 fuel surcharge.

It's half the cost for mum to send stuff to me.

They're probably doing what they've always done as it's always been fairly high, and maybe they're a little slow to adapt to the changing fuel prices, or hoping nobody notices.

$184 to ship a package under 5 kg?! That's borderline criminal.

Admitted it’s going by air.

Surface was $50 cheaper on the base rate but could take 3 months to arrive.

Read an article sometime back that some 19th century treaty is the reason why mailing from North America is so expensive.
