What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

I think it is easier for me to count the number of CBS Trek seasons that I actually finished...

  • Discovery season one and two.
  • Lower Decks season one and two.
  • Picard season one.
  • Strange New Worlds season one.
I know you're pessimistic in regards to the newer series, but I implore you to watch both seasons of Prodigy and season 2 of Strange New Worlds. I find both series to be excellent examples of fun and optimistic Trek.

Prodigy, I made it to the episode on the Galaxy class bridge with Holo-Spock, Odo, Uhura and Crusher. Then I found that it was just moving back into Voyager territory and lost interest.

SNW, it isn't "bad", but honestly it just didn't click for me.

I'm sure I'll eventually get around to them, just won't be anytime soon.

All I'll say is that I found season 2 vastly superior to season 1. And season 1 was by no means bad, in my opinion.

Fair enough and to each their own.

PRO is remarkably good. I'm still surprised by how well-written and executed both seasons of the series were.

Prodigy made Chakotay well-written and not wooden.

Let me repeat that.

Chakotay.
I will forever be in awe of what the Hagemans and Aaron Waltke accomplished with Prodigy. To nail a serialized series arc across forty episodes in a show aimed at kids in an engaging manner for adults is a feat I don't think any of the other shows could pull off.

It's really worth it, honestly. It indulged in the fanservice in that episode, but by-and-large, Prodigy only presents shoutouts when it directly enhances and pushes forward the plot. It has a purpose to the story, it's not there to just titillate the audience.

Bill and I have gone round and round on Trek over the years and while I think both seasons of Prodigy are brilliant, I’m going to be honest and say I think there’s too much nostalgia for him to enjoy there. Nothing personal against him or his opinion. I actually quite like Bill. It’s just what I’ve gleaned from our conversations over the years.

But I could be totally wrong.

Here's my controversial opinion (and I'm sure it's not the first time I've said it, but it seems timely):

Ezri Dax is absolutely necessary for our experience of the Dax symbiote. I'm very sorry for the circumstances and whatever drama and employment happened for the actress. (But she got to be in a multi-season sitcom with Ted Danson. She landed on her feet. If show business was easy I would have been an actor.) But if was not for those circumstances they would never have done those stories.

But WE got to experience what we had only heard about at the beginning of the show. WE got to meet a new Dax who was also the old Dax but was also the new Dax. Now it was real. (And we had Worf along for the ride to truly drive home the point.)

I think the Trill are the best done and most interesting species that Star Trek has done. Vulcans, Romulans, and (especially) Klingons are a slice of certain facets of Humanity. They are less than and either (supposedly) unburdened by our weaknesses (Vulcans) or unaided by our virtues (Klingons). The Trill really are weirdly (and maybe impractically) different.

(The Cardasians are just Space Soviets. The Bajorans are practically human.)
