What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

No. Your primary function is what you HAVE to do. There is never a time that cataloging gaseous anomalies and star charting takes precedence over defense. "The Romulans are attacking our outposts." "But SCIENCE!" "Ah. your primary purpose. Very good then. Carry on."

I would disagree with that on a fundamental level. A primary purpose is... a primary purpose. As person, my "primary purpose" is to work and pay taxes? I have to do it, but... I would disagree that it's my primary purpose.

Rather, I would argue the exact opposite. Yes, defense is something Starfleet has to do. It doesn't particularly want to. It wants to engage in it's primary purpose of seeking out new worlds and new civilizations. It just... has to do defense when necessary.

It's like flight attendants. Most of the time they serve drinks and meals. But their PRIMARY purpose is to get passengers off the plane in emergencies.

That's also objectively incorrect. A flight attendants primary purposes is to... serve the passengers and generally run the cabin. An additional duty they have when the need arises is to get passengers off the plane in emergencies, which if/when that occurs, BECOMES their primary duty for the duration of the emergency.

Maybe that is a better way to think about Starfleet? Defense isn't its primary function, until it has to be. When the situation arises, their primary function IS defense. When the need lessens, they revert to their previous primary function of science and exploration.

That's the differnce in being a Hybrid Organization.

They adopted the Military Structure to a Civilian Organization and merged the two into a Hybrid Service.

That's why it's not purely one or the other.

It's a bit of both.
Pretty sure it has military structure from day one. I'm hard pressed to find any "civilian" aspects to its structure

So, because they have bigger support departments, they are no longer the military?

Can't argue with that logic...
They are military when they need to be.

It just so happens that it's a additional responsibility.

It's not a primary responsibility.

That's why I don't classify it the way you are doing it.

Think we just completed another loop guys.
The obligatory meme

Then the only answer is to agree to disagree on the subject.

We're not changing each others minds about it.

We'll have to agreee to disagree about it.

It's just such a bizarre argument to even be having. It's quite clearly stated in the shows and movies what Star Trek... which... is not (primarily) a military.

If you drop any and everything else to go fight wars, then it is your primary responsibility.

If a the stove in my house catches fire and I attempt to put it out, my primary occupation is Firefighter?

Only if your job is firefighter.

Do they have awards of valor for finding a new nebula?
Don't people find new Nebula's all the time?

That's not worth deserving a award in.

Harry Kim received the Cochrane Medal of Excellance
Before he was assigned to the USS Voyager, Harry Kim, as an undergraduate student at Starfleet Academy, received one of these medals for his contributions to warp theory on stardate 47302.5. These contributions proved useful for the development of tertiary field projection equations in the tetryon warp coil simulation programming
