What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

JMS was the Series Creator, also wrote & Directed most of the episodes for the entire 5 season run.
JMS has two directorial credits to his name: "Sleeping in Light," the last episode of B5, and Babylon 5: The Lost Tales. So hardly "most" of the episodes.

He was the showrunner, and he wrote most of the episodes over the course of its run, but he didn't direct much of the show.
JMS had to change a lot of plans after Michael O'Hare's mental issues forced him to leave the show, and then the condensing of the final arc of the show in season 4 when it was looking like the series was going to be cancelled. From what I know of his original plan document, it wasn't as strictly regimented as folks think.
JMS commonly said in interviews when B5 was airing that his big doc on the show was double or triple encrypted on his computer. In actually, he just had it in a binder sitting on a shelf in his office.

I’m not into Star Trek for science. Frankly, I think approaching Star Trek from a perspective in which scientific accuracy is imperative…

My mother would have said to such a person: ‘you’re on a hiding to nothing’.

*It means ‘doomed to fail’ for USA bros*

Don’t post when high. This is what happens. Look at it and just *think* about it next time. Just *think*

R.

STAR TREK, at its best, fires the imagination and makes you think about all sorts of subjects, whether it's ethical, metaphysical, or otherwise. In other words, inspirational and aspirational.

Doesn't need to be scientifically accurate to inspire people.
So much this.

At the end of the day, story and characters are what matter. Arguing which nacelle type is canon, or how many minutes it would take at X speed to go Y light years, or how many degrees the bridge is turned from fore are ancillary points.

Yeah I wish Star Trek had a more organized approach to it rather than random plotlines and loopholes all over but at the same time I do like the Episodic approach.

That's what happens when a franchise grows in such popularity, that it's out of the creators hands and takes on a life of it's own.
Yes, but that doesn't make it anymore clearly defined. The rules are nebulous early on, as is very common in TV shows. And then fans take it and make it something else and demand it conform to standards or memorizing details not considered important by the writers.

That's on the original creator and their writing staff to do that.

If the rules aren't very well defined, things will get messy.

Sadly, most shows don't define those rules well enough early on.

And then fans take it and make it something else and demand it conform to standards or memorizing details not considered important by the writers.
That's true with most shows.

But it happens more when you have Expanded Lore that is sold to the fans as "Technical Manuals" and expected to be treated as "Canon" by said fans.

I'm sure you saw the ST:TNG Technical Manual at your local book store back in the day.

I know I did, and spent alot of time reading through it.

But those were "EXPENSIVE" to own, and I was a kid, I didn't have that kind of money.

The spore drive in DSC is ridiculous, even for Trek tech. But in episodes I actually enjoyed I went along for the ride and sometimes got a kick out of spore jumps.

"Can it work" is a purely relative metric in science fiction and at this point Star Trek is 20% science and 80% suspension of disbelief on a good day.

We can pick and choose what we all think about what was ridiculous about that show. There are choices aplenty. As if they didn't lose my attention beforehand the turbolift roller coaster of doom sealed that deal for good.
