Star Trek: Early Voyages

I think Early Voyages does look like a prequel to TOS a lot and Strange New Worlds looks like a prequel to TOS by way of modern reimaginaiton like the Kelvinverse. Both are fine approaches. But also Early Voyages is almost 30 years old, it was a then modern exploration and look at the 60s show using the designs as they were without embarrassment which I loved. The era of "Relics" or "Trials and Tribble-ations" or "Secrets of Vulcan Fury." I always loved the image of Colt with the bigass phaser rifle standing atop the broken shuttle. I loved the opening comic "Flesh of My Flesh" wondering what the hell was happening. The death of Cusack was heartbreaking. I loved its use of April as to Pike as Kirk was to Decker, and even the friction of April and Number One. Colt's arc with the Well of Tomorrows was pretty great (although I realise now they were banking a lot on one person when the future wasn't terrible) and seeing the Enterprise as an exhibit in San Francisco always stuck with me. And then it just ended halfway through a storyline, like a few other Marvel Trek comics then. Man I would have loved just one more comic.

Nah, Enterprise did a good job of convincing ppl that it was technologically less advanced than TOS. Discovery and SNW are failing at this miserably. People thinking they're doing a good job of it are in denial.

They need to stop with the prequel shows and do something else.
Even though it's inconsistent with what we see in "Relics" and "Trials and Tribble-ations," I basically view TOS as its own thing now. Post-1979 Trek, especially post-1996 (First Contact), had a TOS period, but it didn't look like what was aired on television in 1966-1969. SNW Pike's Enterprise looks more like the pre-refit precursor to STTMP Kirk's Enterprise to me than the original model that's now in the Smithsonian.

This is just me! No one else needs to look at it this way.

It may have convinced you, but it did not convince "people" (or, "ppl," I guess) of that at all, at least based on the fulminating online discourse in 2001 and 2002.
I seem to recall complaints at the time over the use of flat-screen TVs on the bridge of the Enterprise as it was more advanced than what Kirk's Enterprise had.

Weren't all the screens on Kirk's Enterprise flat too?
Yes but they weren't flatscreen televisions with animated graphics, which people back in 2001 thought were too advanced for the NX-01 and therefore wasn't in same timeline as Kirk's Enterprise.

I was in high school when ENT was first broadcast (and the tail end of VOY). Kinda hard to get my head around the idea there's longer between now and the end of ENT than there was between the end of TOS and the start of TNG. But I remember the debates, more in school than online at that time. What an era. But yes, there was a lot of arguments about the minutia. Always is. Happy times.

Early Voyages is also having quite the influence on the OTOY shorts. After "Unification", imagine what they might do for the 60th...

I recently pulled all my comics from storage to rebag/board and put in longboxes, and the top thing I'm looking forward to revisiting from the project are the EV issues. That DVD with scanned PDF issues just can't compare with the originals.

And yes... EV is 100X better than SNW :)

You guys can post that stuff all you want, you're not changing my mind. ENT, yes, of course it looks more advanced than the original series. What I'm saying is it does a WAY BETTER job of convincing us that it is technologically inferior to TOS than Discovery or SNW does.

The ship interiors are super cramped compared to TOS, and look more like a modern day submarine interior as opposed to a starship, they have no shields, no tractor beams, no phasers, the transporter is brand new, and people are scared of it, the clothes they wear, uniforms, civilian (baseball caps etc) are closer to what we wear now. Stuff like that. They made an attempt, so therefore they did a better job.

Discovery and SNW are making zero attempt at saying "Hey, we're supposed to be in the past!" (Like seriously, for one, what the hell is with the turbolifts flying around some massive, cavernous space like that?) And don't get me started on the blatant disregard for continuity both shows have.

I can watch ENT and see it as being before TOS. Discovery and SNW? Not at all.

I tend to look at SNW as more akin to Smallville or the series Hannibal - they're prequels to established mythos that have their own look and style, but at the end still wind up leading to canonical events (Lois is a reporter, Clark is Superman, Lex is the arch nemesis - Will Graham catches Hannibal, Hannibal is imprisoned).

Pre-time jump Discovery and Strange New Worlds are only 10-6 years before TOS, so they're really not going to be that much more primitive than what we saw on TOS.
It seems to me that they're just trying to look like a cool futuristic sci-fi show set 200 years in the future, and aren't worried about fitting the look of TOS. At this point anything trying to authentically look like it's 10-5 years before TOS is going to look ridiculous.

Which is the problem with both shows. When you get to the point where you're blatantly ignoring the show that STARTED the whole damn franchise, that's when it is time to stop. Or set your show in an alternate timeline (which I say DISCO and SNW are anyway, as there are far too many continuity mistakes for either of them to be Prime timeline. And no, the "TOS is it's own thing" crowd are incorrect!)

Hey all,

As usual, I don’t mind a little bit of thread drift, but at this point it seems the thread has completely morphed into comparing/contrasting the various shows. If you want to discuss the shows, that should probably be done in one of the show-based threads, or in GTD if you’re talking about the franchise overall.

So let’s please bring it back to Early Voyages comic. If you want to compare/contrast EV to SNW, that should be OK, as long as the comic is in the discussion. And thanks to those who have kept the comic centred in their responses.

This, of course, applies to me as well, and I apologize for my own off-topic post on Tuesday.
