Playmates Toys

The figure size just puts me off. Why can't there be a single, industry-wide DIN standard.
You know the XKCD Web Comic about Standards, right?

I'll give you a funny example.

You know how the A4 size Paper Standard is more or less Global in most parts of the world, right?

Japanese NoteBooks that uses the JIS B# size Paper Standards is different from the ISO 216 B# size Paper Standards.

Why did that happen? I don't know the history as to why Japan decided to deviate.
They followed ISO A# & ISO C# specs exactly down to the mm.

Yet ISO B#, when it came to JIS B# decided to deviate by a bit.

And on top of that, each manufacturer interprets the specs a bit differently.

So it's "Human Nature" to see deviations from standards.

It's almost impossible to have a 100% Universal Standard.

This isn't even counting the US and our ANSI Paper Standards

Don't forget, there are plenty of regional variations on the ISO 216 paper size standards as well.

Trying to get consensus on something is like "Herding Cats".

Good Luck with that. People just want to be different for the sake of it sometimes.

Some interesting choices in that second wave for sure. YoH Janeway, T’Pol and Nog would be the ones I'd want to get from these. It’s fun to guess what the accessories coming with these will be.

Here’s hoping they’ll figure out international shipping soon. :(

Pre-ordered Mariner from the Master Replicas line yesterday. Really looking forward to getting these.

Ha, I love Generations Geordi and Worf! The holodeck nautical TNG crew was one of my suggestions so I probably wasn't alone.

Nog, Carol and Valeris too. So we're doing well!

Can't believe Kirk comes with an actual horse lol.

Interesting that we are get 3 figures from Generations. Nog is a fantastic choice. I’m glad we are getting T’Pol 2.0 as well. Worf, Geordi, Romulan Commander and Bem are the only ones I’m iffy on.

Considering the out-there and/or macabre choices in the first wave, I bet Year of Hell Janeway comes with an optional head with her horrific burns from the finale of Part II.
T’Pol could come with an alternate head and hands that show the skin damage humanoids get after exposure to the Sphere Builder space.

Given the cost, I’m probably only gonna do the Lower Deckers, Rok and Hologram Janeway (to complete the Prodigy set Playmates abandoned)
Mostly the same, but I probably won't be able to resist any of the SNW guys.

Interesting choices: Nog was expected, but sailor Worf was made by PM. At least Geordi seems to get the full costume! And Bem will probably separate XD
BEM is a weird choice. I may get him for the WTF factor, lol...

Size is pretty close, but stylistically they're miles apart so don't look great together on the shelf.
Yeah, the original figures have kind of cartoons proportions, while the new ones are more realistic, which makes them look weirdly skinny next to the old guys.

I mean, the whole point is to explore characters never done before.

Yeah, just seems like if they wanted to do an Animated figure, Arex and M'Ress haven't been done and would be better sellers than a goofy one-off character from one of the weaker episodes.

IMO, I think the only time we came remotely close to a standard industry size was during the early to mid 80's, when most toy companies were putting out action figures at the 3.75-inch scale to follow suit with Star Wars and G.I. Joe--and even then, it wasn't followed by everyone.

IIRC, my childhood toy box from the late 70s/80s even then had a huge amount of dissonance in terms of size.

Action Force/GI Joe, around the same size as Star Wars. But then He-Man figures were way bigger and Thundercats figures were even bigger still…

All these companies have their own styles and they are all trying to fill their own niches.

They probably wanna make Bem because it'll be quite fancy with magnets holding the pieces together. Has that been done in a lot of figures before?

There were a lot of action figure lines based on movies and TV shows back then, and most of them were in the 3.75-inch scale (they even made action figures for M*A*S*H!)
