Playmates Toys

I was really close to buying the whole set. But you’re right it’s a big chunk of change.

So I just pre-ordered the 4 I really want the most, Garrett, Weyoun, Jellico and Archer. I’ll probably circle back on Valkris and Preston once we get closer to release. But I’m gonna skip Sulu and Tuvix.

Wait, so these are finally available … but only for US folks? That’s an odd choice. In this day and age to release something like this and not make it available internationally from day one seems weird. Would have been nice to be told that in advance. They didn’t even make the frickin’ page available to non-US people.

And I’m probably in the minority, but I could really do without those accessories, some of which feel slightly in poor taste. I mean, why would I choose to display a (dead?) woman with a bloody piece of shrapnel sticking out of her forehead up on my shelf? I probably take this more seriously than it’s meant to be, but I just find it weird and not very appealing is all.

I would use the injured heads (also Preston's) for recreations of those scenes. Preston on a biobed, Bones ready to pull the blanket over, and he grabs Kirk's flap.
To use Archer's splashy champaigne though, his shirt would have to be removeable :D

Heh, I don't know what about Shatner's face makes it so hard to capture a decent likeness, he almost always looks a bit off. My personal favorite for a good likeness is the 70s Mego figure. This one is almost there, but the mouth has an expression I don't seem to recall Shatner ever making.
One of the issues toy manufacturers had / have is not working from a fine artist who works in accurate, life-like sculptures. With Shatner-based toys, it always appeared as if the various molds were based on loose approximations, rather than accurate sculpts. That said, Mego's Kirk figure was rare in capturing a very Shatner-like expression at certain angles.
The Megos were closer to TAS than TOS
I disagree, since Mego were basing the figures off of TOS, with no TAS influences, and advertised the figures as being based on the live action series. Moreover, the character designs were clearly patterned after the actors, bearing no resemblance to Filmation's character designs. I recall the Mego Museum once had some copy trying to make the Mego=Filmation claim, yet posted no evidence to support the claim, other than some reference to the monochromatic bright color of the figure accessories, as if TAS' counterparts were the same...

...clearly, the TAS Phaser was based on TOS', but the color was brightened to make its details easier to see, while Mego (and endless other toy manufacturers) often used one color in the molding process as it was less expensive than adding paint details, although companies such as Playmates would add more screen-accurate paint apps in their 1990s figure line.

Is the last one a bar of soap?
Why does it look so bad, was that a bad plastic mold?

I feel like Trek often flirts with unappealing merchandise like the irradiated Spock dying opposite Kirk scene as a Christmas ornament. :wtf:

As for the figures, I think their meant for collectors who want to capture iconic moments and that includes figures of dying Spock and Kirk with blood on his uniform.

I wonder when they will reveal the rest of Wave 2. Maybe SDCC or something. Very curious to see who they got to go with Generations Kirk. Would love Disco Bones from TMP.

Hopefully we find out the two pre orders for MR’s March figures soon too. I don’t want to miss out on the Lower Deckers.

I don’t mind them including PP’s burned face or Garret with bloody shrapnel damage. Morbid as they may be I think it’s unique. DST did do both a burned and bloody Khan from WoK and the melty irradiated Spock so it’s not like Nacelle is treading new ground.

It's like classic Riker's "battle damage" torn uniform, only this time, fans can swap the damaged parts in and out as they please :D

The best part about that first Playmates Riker was when they did the 2nd wave with the crew in their season 1/2 uniforms they just painted over the rips in Rikers uniform instead of just taking the 5 minutes to sculpt out the tears. It’s not like they weren’t already doing some resculpting.

They did remove the rips in the resculpted torso, but the arms and legs were reused without any changes. The Tom Riker figure was a simple repaint of the Wave 1 Riker.

Given the cost, I’m probably only gonna do the Lower Deckers, Rok and Hologram Janeway (to complete the Prodigy set Playmates abandoned)
