Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

I welcome the Odyssey because I like having ship name variants. This saves me from tackling a relabeling of the Enterprise-D with all those finicky aztec details. Johnny Lightning gave us the USS Yamato back in the day (but with the NCC-71807 registry instead of NCC-1305-E). Now we can have another Galaxy-class sister ship.

On a personal side, another bonus is my fondness for a Galaxy-class Odyssey, as such a ship is a Special Ship in some Star Trek: Armada missions from back in the day.

Loved that game. I miss the old Activision and Taldren ship-based games. They captured something that the newer games never seemed to have.

Me too! My gateway cow-looking computer back in the day couldn't handle the game graphically, and frame rates and stutter made it a difficult experience (IIRC, the Defiant mission with Worf where you are outrunning the enemy was a pain because of this.)

More recently, I had the opportunity to play it on a modern PC via GOG - such a satisfying experience. It was my first chance to play the campaigns (including the hidden one, which I never new existed!)from beginning to end. I dont want to spoil what happens for anyone who may be tempted to give it a go, but it was cool and peak TNG Trek, for sure.

I still have most of the Activision games installed, including Voyager: Elite Force (my #1 game, possibly ever.), EF II, SFC III and Hidden Evil. I am tempted to boot up away team, that is one of the few Activision games I never played through the end.

I remember the ads they had in the Star Trek Magazines for these games too - they always looked so epic!

There are some old PC games I can't get to work on Windows 10, namely interplays "Star Trek: New Worlds" - Played it when I first got it 20 years ago for a few minutes, and I have been trying to go back and scratch that itch ever since.

  • E-F box has raised, foil lettering on the box lid which gives it a premium look, but otherwise same design as previous releases. Magazine is full of info - didn't realize there was a small captain's yacht looking craft at the ship's aft. (it's there in concept art, I am assuming it is still a part of the ship design and you can kind of make it out on the model?)

Assuming it's the same as STO, it's not a yacht, it's a full-on starship, Aquarius Light Escort, equivalent to a Bird of Prey or Chakotay's raider. In STO you can deploy it as a support power if you're flying an Odyssey class, or you can also just use one as your ship. (The Odyssey can also separate like a Galaxy, but unfortunately you can't have both that and the escort at the same time.)

I just noticed that the bridge window is missing on the Fanhome Stargazer model, they've just done it up like how it looks on the Ent-G

Compared to the images I can see online, it does look different. Looking at the physical model, there are some shapes in that area which may be a low-detailed bridge window, but it's a stretch.

I then started going down the rabbit hole - tried to compare it to the magazine cover and the photo of the Stargazer I received from Dave Blass, but the bridge window area is conveniently not shown in either. :vulcan:

I was viewing some videos on youtube to assist with my efforts to paint impulse engines on the E-F, and got to see that auxilliary craft in action. Tough little ship.

Is it just me or is it a bit weird that we are getting the Dauntless from Prodigy before we get the Protostar? Would cop for that in a heartbeat. That said, the Dauntless looks really cool.
I think it's weirder that playmates gave us a rehash of the TOS and TNG Enterprise again when they all know we want a Prodigy, Voyager, DS9, etc. (and some of us with DST collections are dying to get an ENT-C to complete the line-up.)

the 3D renders in the Magazine do have the window from what I can see online

I think I like the nacelles better than way

They're probably intentionally saving the highly anticipated Protostar for the end of the line. If they front load the collection with all the desired ships, people will cancel halfway through and not stick around until the end.

I think if Master Replicas was smart, they would front load their collection with some ships that Fanhome won't be making until much later (like the Protostar).

I was kind of hoping that we might see more of the production model by now. It looks promising, but there are some issues - the off-angle difference between the primary hull and the nacelles for one. They should be aligned, but it looks like there's some sagging going on. That, and the stand it's sitting on is not helping matters. The grid lines are a little too large and deep for the scale of the model, but not a show-stopper.

On the plus side, it's big, it's built from die-cast metal (so hefty and sturdy construction), it's detailed and it has a beautiful paint job that does a reasonable justice to the original TMP pearlescent palette. The lighting looks good and the Surak shuttle is a nice bonus.

BTW, there's an on-going discussion starting here: https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/tomy-star-trek-diecast-ship-replicas.311647/page-11 with earlier pages dedicated to TOS model before the refit was announced. :)

Well I got my Titan from Fanhome and immediately cancelled the subscription.

I thought the quality was pretty good on the whole, but the Titan feels very light and is mostly plastic. Window alignment was actually pretty good but the impulse engines don't look great at all.

I think it was decent value at the introductory price of £37.95, but the regular subscription price of £47 would be too high, let alone the individual sale at £55 + £4 p&p.

I'm not really interested in the other ships currently available but may purchase the odd one individually depending what they release. I think the Protostar would be the only tempting one, and I believe that's going to be an XL at £80! So perhaps not.

Yeah, doing the Protostar as a XL is not ideal. Same with the Voyager-A.

Got an email from MR. They are releasing a “full sized” version of the TOS Enterprise dedication plaque. I’d probably be on it if I didn’t have the Eaglemoss version.
