Not to mention since it's supposed to be set on a resort planet, that suggests regular location shooting, which costs more than shooting in a studio does.
What about using the AR wall?
The original point still stands, even with the AR wall, this show shouldn't be expected to be cheaper than any other Trek series.
Since its inception, every iteration of Star Trek has had costs which run into the millions. Unless they start doing radio plays, that’s unlikely to change.
I don't quite get this. Obviously it depends on the premise, about which we know basically nothing, but there is no reason why a half hour sitcom should cost as much as an episode of Disco or SNW.
It probably won't be *that* much cheaper, but if you did something simple using two or three sets, e.g. a space hotel, a bar and a living space, and you don't need extensive visual effects, it could come in at a lower budget.
Maybe a bit less than Disco or SNW, probably not by much and still significantly more than a typical half hour sitcom.
Things that will likely contribute to a higher cost:
-There will likely be at least one alien character in the main cast requiring make-up and prosthetics.
-Since these characters likely aren't Starfleet officers, they'll need new costumes done in civilian clothing. Being in the future and on a different planet makes it less likely they'll be wearing "off the rack" contemporary clothing, necessitating new costumes.
-New props, since again, it's not Starfleet, you can't just use phasers or tricorders that were left over from Picard.
-Since it's the future they won't be able to include product placement deals to bring the costs down like most shows do. Granted this problem impacts Star Trek as a whole.
Sure, but all these things are baked in to a Star Trek show. I’m not saying they’ll be able to churn out dozens of episodes like Cheers, I’m saying that it could be done at a lower budget than other Star Trek shows.
Take PIC S3 for example. It’s no secret that proportionally more of the budget was spent on salaries to get the TNG cast back, plus the existing PIC characters and new guest stars. That’s why the show mainly takes place on the Titan sets, themselves built for the previous season.
Ergo, if you had that level of production value and a less expensive cast, you could likely make the show at a lower overall budget.
But it really depends what Paramount wants. Maybe they want a show with a lot of exotic location shooting and A-list actors. That could make it the most expensive show of all time.
You can only cut so much before the show ceases to be recognizable as Star Trek.
Mississauga is quite exotic this time of year.
It's still got that untapped potential! Conversely, you can only redress Bronson Canyon so many times.
The bridge and ready room were built for the Stargazer, but most of the other sets like sickbay and engineering were made for PIC3. On the other hand, stuff like the Shrike was just a redressed La Sirena, so it was definitely cutting as many corners as possible. Oh, and stupid M'Talas Prime was a redress of Confederation Earth, a set that appeared for a few seconds in PIC2. Most of season two was an exercise in using their budget on setting up season three while making season two as cheaply as possible.
The Covid lockdowns forced a reconfiguring of PIC S2.
And you know what I love what we got from it. It works with what the series seemed to be going for. Season 1 a story about overcoming loss and learning to move forward, season 2 is about forgiving yourself and unburdening yourself from your past. Season 3 should have been about embracing life. If a "true" for lack of a better term season 3 had been made it could have been a very satisfying complete package.
At least for me anyway but I'm antisocial and often an inadvertant contrarian but they should spend a fortune entirely on my entertainment.
I really still want Legacy, but due to circumstances at Paramount my hopes fade every day. The idea has the potential to be what SNW is to TOS - SNW being a modern reinvention of TOS, with Legacy being a chance to do a modern reinvention of TNG era. It has a symmetry that I find appealing.
It does feel that the objective has shifted towards seeing what other genres ST can do rather than reinventing ST itself for a modern audience - SNW is leaning into the genre-bending each week, the Tawny sitom is a new format, SFA leaning into the teen drama audience, Section 31 being... whatever the heck S31 was meant to be (basically everything but ST). My fear is that straight up ST is not seen as sustainable, no matter the level of reinvention (SNW obviously coming the closest - but even that being pushed into the "genre of the week" format and a question mark over how much longer it will go on for..)
