Sloppy AI Image....

There was an article discussing tv shows that were before their time and this was the image that was used for Star Trek. The movie ships mixed in. And poor Chekov looks like the Ceti eel is now under the skin of his forehead! :p

I've seen that image a lot lately. It's obviously a composite - some portrait shots of the actors, and some taken from live action, like Spock getting ready to phaser one of the parasites in "Operation: Annihilate!" and Scotty making his report from the Botany Bay in "Space Seed" - but I actually never really noticed the movie ships before. Who created this, I wonder?

In my experience, if you see a recognisable spaceship in an image, it probably wasn't generated by AI. But whatever the process was here, it was not kind to the Enterprise's nacelles.

Surely it just means it wasn't made by the AIs we have access to. Copyright holders must have ones that aren't blocked from their copyrighted imagery.

That said, I suspect this was a quick cutout and paste job put through an AI filter, rather than being fully AI generated. But to be honest, who knows nowadays?

Chekov sneezed just as the barber was trimming his bangs.

Not going to comment on the quality of this piece, but I’m reasonably certain this is not an AI generated image, sloppy or otherwise. This looks very much like a classic Photoshop, pasting together various images and attempting to unify them with a generous application of the liquify tool. This is also usually done to try and give the work a painterly appearance.

Who created this, I wonder?
Apparently by someone named Uebelator on deviantart. The upload date of 2017 is also pretty conclusive evidence that this was created before the widespread availability of AI image generation.

I’m not sure how serious you were with the “AI slop” title or if it was just meant as a jest, but to me as an artist it’s interesting that we reached a point where people look at actual human created art and assume it must be AI generated once there’s something that maybe doesn’t look perfect about it. Are people in general having such a hard time recognizing actual AI generated images?

Loving the purple tos style uniform. What division of starfleet could that be?
I’m thinking bar staff, cocktail servers.

Yeah, everybody claims AI now for anything that doesn't look right. This is just some wonky photoshopping using photos and filters. It's like the most popular reaction to a pic on Facebook is "more AI crap!" even when it's just a pic of an actress that's been touched up a little in PS. And yet you also see piucs that are so bloody obviously AI it's funny, and a buncha people react "so pretty!" "I've never seen this pic of her before!" etc. AI has not only ruined art, it's ruined human perception.

Oh - there's a pic of Kirstie Alley going around on FB. It's very convincing, but she's wearing some kind of Trek leisurewear, like a robe with a badge, that's never been seen before; and her face is way too perfectly rendered and just a little distorted. But half the people who see it think it's some lost publicity shot that's never been seen.

For reference, here are some actual AI generated TOS posters. There’s definitely models out there capable of producing more convincing results, but usually this is what I would have in mind when I hear the phrase “AI slop”. :)

What . . . the actual . . . frig??? :guffaw:

Interesting how nearly every model got the uniforms semi-close. Including some hair helmets.

That particular poster is a common one on sites used by people who run their own home media servers and need poster art for different shows and seasons (in fact, it's the default art for the show on The Movie Database, which means its the default for Plex and similar services). The movie-era ship is used on a lot of fan-made TOS posters (it's less common, but the -E also appears on posters for TNG). Star Trek has some pretty bad/inconsistent poster art available, at least for the pre-Paramount-Plus shows, which were from an era where it was common to put an A-team on producing key art for TV shows. I've thought about trying to create something better and more consistent for the first five shows (or which at least doesn't have things like the wrong ship), but I'm not sure where to begin.

I think I know the one you're talking about. I found a copy that had an agency credit, and another one posted eight years ago, long before anything remotely of that quality was possible using generative AI. Plus, it's the outfit she was wearing in the turbolift scene.

Bowling alley service staff. ;)

Yeah, although many of the uniforms curiously look like Kelvinverse uniforms with the black undershirt.

My favorite details are Nathan Fillion in the top middle one and white Uhura in the one on the right below.

I too thought this might be the image @Forbin is referring to, but then I found this one, which is the more likely candidate, because this one is definitely AI generated.

Those are awful. Seeing Captain Mal up there in the middle amused me, I should do one with the Serenity crew in gold, red and blue. (Imagines Simon Tam in sickbay waving Feinberger's salt shakers at River while she imitates Dr. Van Gelder)

AI Kirstie just makes me sad, I liked her so much in Cheers and TWoK but her life after was a trainwreck.

AI is weird in the way it combines images it finds on the Internet. You can see hints of various actors in the faces it creates. Stewart and Nimoy seem to be popular sources. Perhaps because their images are more common than others on the web.

Galaxy Con is even selling a print of the image up top, with Shatner, Koenig and Takei's signatures!
