Star Trek passings

Another passing we've missed.... Steven Grothe passed in 2020, age of 51. He played the role of Terrasphere 8 Operations Officer in Voyager's episode 'In the Flesh'.

When you turn 60, you'll suddenly feel old just like I did. Yeah, it's kinda scary. 62 got me social security and that sounded like being old. You can't believe you're that old. 65 was even worse. Turning 70 sounds like someone who is REALLY old yet you mostly feel pretty damn young yet. You know, that as a man, you likely only have a few years left. If you're lucky, maybe a decade. Still, if healthy, you go on about your life as if you're 30, albeit with a few aches and pains, vision issues, memory issues. You still think you'll live forever. Of course, I don't do most of things I did at 30 - no ATV, no motorcycle, no jetboat, no long-distance hiking. I don't even like looking in the mirror anymore.
Isn't part of that have to do with how you take care of yourself physically & mentally?

Pro Wrestler "Billy Gunn" is 61 y/o currently and looks GREAT.
Billy is wrestling in AEW alongside his 2x sons who are a natural IRL Brother Tag-Team.

Chris Jericho is 54 y/o and still bumping and actively Wrestling as well.

I am actually in pretty good health, overweight by about 15-20 lbs. It's what retirement does to you. I like to hike but I have to take my time and take frequent breaks as I have had a bum knee for decades so my hike lengths going uphill are limited to about 2 miles give or take each direction and 4 miles on level ground. I used to do long-distance hiking of 30-45 miles in my 30's but as the knee went bad, I had to quit. I quit riding ATV after ten years due to lack of places to ride. I rode numerous times cross-country totalling 80,000 miles over ten years on my Suzuki Cavalcade with no accidents. Owned the jetboat for 3 years taking it on both rivers and lakes, salt and fresh water.... until I blew the motor up. I ended all these activities gradually between 50 & 56, when I retired. I am still mentally alert but am noticing signs of memory loss & balance loss. I've cut back on long-distance driving due to vision instability, not vision loss. I used to be an avid whitewater rafter and guide, twice doing 102 miles down the Colorado river over a 14 day period and a 5-day trip down the Salmon river in Idaho/Washington and other rivers many times over. I used to water ski and able to do a jump and tricks having learned from an Uncle who was the state champion in Minnesota for seven straight years but I quit at 40. Never got up the nerve to barefoot tho he was still doing it at 65 but more for show than a regularity. He owned a boat with a 750HP inboard motor and could pull 12 skiers behind him. Extremely loud. He never raced however. Today? I spend my time online - Facebook, Utube, doing online scientific scut work for various scientists, editing translations of German scifi novels, collecting digital wallpapers similar to what Bill Gates does. I ran the worlds largest Star Trek Klingon fanclub for 12 years and a boardgame group for 14 years. I'm also a writer. I enjoy offroading with my friend, Cal, in his monster Jeep - 37" wheels, heavy duty axles, locker gears, winch, heavy duty bumpers, many high-intensity lights front & rear and on top. In all the years we've done this, we have never had a trip without some breakdown, which is why we carry every tool possible and many parts that typically break or break down. Of course, we take a lot of risks which explains that so we have a jack and comealongs, tow straps and we have used them all in both summer and winter. I've even climbed Mt. St. Helens twice since it blew, once in summer and once in Spring. I recommend the Spring. So yes, I am an active person, always have been. I guess they call that a type A personality. I try to keep my brain engaged. Don't get me wrong. I am slowing down considerably.

Kevin Lowe passed in 2023, age of 65. He played Q'ret in ST:Voyager's episode 'Ashes to Ashes.'

Lindsey Ginter passed, age of 73, 2024. He played Saavedra in ST: Voyager's episode 'Memorial'.

As long as I've kept track, I still keep missing death notices. Here's one...
Vincent Mazella, Jr., passed in 2011, age of 53. He played a Bajoran citizen in DSN's episode 'A Man Alone'.

Just read article about Roberto Orci. I had a lot of admiration for his Star Trek work. He was very kind to interact with fans on trekmovie.com as well. He had a real love and knowledge of Star Trek and I was very impressed with both Star Trek 2009 and Star Trek: Into Darkness.

51 years old is way too young. That's just tremendously sad. My sincere condolences to his family. I'll remember him in my prayers.

A lot of you have already heard this, but, really, life is short and unpredictable. You can be young, you can take care of yourself, and something can still go horribly wrong with your health through not fault of your own. Try to make every day count and reach out to your friends. God Bless.

Just posted about this in the thread over in the kelvin forum.
Very sad news. Thanks for your for your contribution to Star Trek. RIP
All goes to show life is short, so enjoy yourself and live to the fullest.

Thanks Roberto for the good times I’ve shared with friends and family at the cinema.

Another passing we've missed. Leanza Cornett passed in 2020, age of 49. She played a Ferengi waiter in the DSN episode 'The Jem'Hadar.'
