SMG to star in Buffy sequel series from Chloé Zhao

I got bad news for you if you don't know what a Buffy the Vampire Slayer show would be about after 10-12 seasons of the two shows. The reason we have doubts is because they've got an indie darling director who made the Eternals.

Whose trials and tribulations are parodied in The Franchise.

As a millennial who grew up basically alongside Buffy - I see massive appeal in seeing how she is now. The timing of the world feels right to revisit her. I'm excited for this.

I do wonder if the "awakening" of all the empowered Slayers in "Chosen" could actually be used as an allegory for the world of today - Buffy helped many a person of that generation find their empowerment growing up (basically the entire analogy of the "every girl who could be a slayer, will be a slayer" series finale) - but how are they now? The world has changed. Its scary for many. Is that strength holding up in the face of it all? Is every slayer still "slaying"? What does that sense of empowerment we felt back then look like in the face of the world today? That to me feels like an avenue for a continuation as relevant for today potentially as it was back then, but with an up-to-date context.

It doesn't have to be a misery-fest commentary on the world of today - it can be a positive tale in the face of that, just like it was back then. Something about finding strength, finding your identity, navigating the world. The concept doesn't inherently have to change - in theory, Buffy's story is one we could follow forever. The generation that watched Buffy as a teen could in theory follow her to the retirement home and what life throws at her then.

Maybe us millenials need our slayer again - at the point in her life we are now. Use the horrors of a 40 something's life for Buffy in the same metaphorical way teen Buffy faced them in High School/College/Work. Maybe she can help the new generation like Giles helped her and the inevitable new characters can do for this generation.

Beyond that at this stage - I think I just want to wait and see what comes of it before deriding/celebrating too much. I'm just happy this is on the cards, it doesn't appear to be a total remake from scratch but a continuation of some kind, and Sarah is involved as Buffy. I always felt SMG had a real handle on her character, even voicing some disapproval of what a lot see as the less successful parts of the original run, so having her not only starring but Exec Producing is a big plus.

Sarah Michelle Gellar confirms they are developing a ‘BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER’ sequel series. We will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there

The above in easier to read text, from SMG's facebook:

"So….. you might have heard some news this week, but I realize you haven’t heard from me.
Three years ago, I got a call from my dear friend and mentor, Gail Berman. She told me that she wanted me to sit down with Chloé Zhao to hear her take on a potential “Buffy” revival. I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I’ve always done, I told Gail that I just didn’t see a way for the show to exist again. We’d always been aligned on that, but this time I heard something different in her voice. I eventually agreed to go (mainly just to meet Chloé) and our twenty minute coffee quickly turned into a four hour adventure. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we both talked about how much this show means to us.

While I didn’t agree to anything at that meeting, I did shock myself by agreeing to continue the conversation. These conversations did, in fact, continue over the next few years and eventually we added the incredible Nora and Lilla Zuckerman to our little tribe until ultimately, one day, we landed on an idea.

I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit “Buffy” and her world, but it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right. This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.

I feel so lucky to be on this journey with these four unbelievably talented women, all of whom love “Buffy” as much as I do. And as much as you do. Thank you to all the fans who never stopped asking for this. This will be for you."

I know it's unlikely they get Xander back considering the actors legal issues, but i wonder if they might try to get Hannigan back.

According to the EW story, she's only said that she's "open to appearing", so it sounds like even if it's done, it's not guaranteed she'll be on it.

Holy Crap, the end of the article mentions an audible original audiobook/audio drama called Slayers, which has James Marsters, Charisma Carpenter, James Charles Leary, Anthony Head, Juliet Landau, Danny Strong, Emma Claufield (Ford), and Amber Benson all back. It's set 10 years after the end of the series and features a new Slayer and Spike working with a alternate universe Cordy from a world where she was the Slayer, and the baddie is her universe's Drusila.

It feels to me from SMG's post that Buffy herself WILL be back. Sarah is exec producing for sure, and the wording of her post certainly seems to suggest it. I suspect the question mark is over how much and how often.

Personally I'd love her to have Giles-esque role in proceedings (perhaps more akin to S7 Giles recurring? But ideally more central) Someone who can be a role model "adult" for the younger characters, and act as that parental figure in the way we the audience looked up to Giles alongside the scooby gang) - but like many things we will see I guess.

By the way, even if the pilot episode is approved, SMG may not be happy with the project and may leave at the end of the first season or may cause it to be cancelled. He has done this before in some of his post-Buffy projects. Even if Hulu approves, he may say he doesn't want to play. He may leave the project after the pilot episode or may cancel it himself. But if he is not going to be the lead actor, the best case scenario is that he may not be happy with the series and the cast may leave at the end of the first season.

If you're talking about Sarah Michelle Gellar, you mean she/her, not he/his. I guess this is a translation issue from Turkish?

Sadly got cancelled after one release even though more were planned. I can't help wonder now if the rights were pulled because of the new TV series.

SMG sounds exactly like every actor who's coaxed and flattered and bribed into reviving an old role.

And there have been a few of them lately, gamely signing on and suiting up to disappoint fans both new and old.

Maybe in the third year they'll bring Terry Matalas in to usher nuBuffy through its hospice season.

You noticed that none of these actors were fooled, right? They just went back to the roles they played in the past thinking they would continue with a good project. Some of them had to go back to popular TV series and roles because none of the other TV series or movies they played after that role worked. For example: Michael C. Hall and the TV series Dexter.

The Crown spinoff that still might happen "Camelot".

And for their trouble we got Picard and the Frasier reboot. Also the new Murphy Brown.
