I just wondered. I have the original novel by HG Wells and wondered what might have happened had the TARDIS and say 12th Doctor my favourite landed in old London town during the martian invasion do you think he would have gotten involved to save Earth?

No need when we have our mighty germ army to decimate those pesky martians from outer space!

Off topic but there was a book about Sherlock Holmes and the WOTW

I haven’t read it but have read this book in similar vein by a different author but which is set some time after Wells’ novel

I worked up a proposal for a Short Trips: The War of the Worlds anthology about fifteen years ago about the Doctors' adventures during the Martian Invasion, and I was waiting for the copyright to expire in the UK before pitching it to Big Finish. But they stopped doing the Short Trips prose anthologies. I would have wanted at least two of the stories to take place on Mars, one of those two to have the Doctor as part of the crew of Thomas Edison's revenge invasion from Garrett P. Serviss' Edison's Conquest of Mars, the unauthorized American sequel.

Manly Wade Wellman's book is interesting. I call it a "novel with Sherlock Holmes." There's little in the way of Sherlock Holmes doing what he does best. Rather, it's what he sees and does during the invasion.

Also...

Holmes and Mrs. Hudson are romantically involved.

This book is a ton of fun. It takes place about a decade after a second Martian fleet arrives at Earth and apologizes for the actions of the first invasion. Earth and Mars are allied, with Earth scholars visiting Mars and learning from the cool minds of the ancient Martians. Then there's a murder at the Martian embassy in London, and Sherlock Holmes becomes involved in an investigation that spans two worlds. This, contra Wellman, is "a Sherlock Holmes novel"; he does his thing, even if it's on Mars. Highly recommended.

There's also The Massacre of Mankind: Sherlock Holmes vs. The War of the Worlds, by D.G. Leigh. It is terrible. You might find my review on Amazon.

There's also a graphic novel from the 1980s. I'm blanking on the name. If I remember correctly, there's a Martian corpse at the British Museum, it's stolen, and Holmes is brought it to investigate.

Not related to Sherlock Holmes, Stephen Baxter's sequel, The Massacre of Mankind is also highly recommended.

Y'know, it just occurred to me this morning...

There is the line of novels -- I think there's 6 so far -- that mashes Doctor Who with classic literature. Legends of Camelot, The Wonderful Doctor of Oz, etc. Now that WotW is public domain in the UK, you could pitch a mash-up. :)

It would be a very short story.... 12th Doctor would just school the Martians

Coincidentally this popped up on my Facebook feed today. Is it part of the same series?

Yup! There's also a Frankenstein crossover coming out this summer.

There are crossovers with Treasure Island (11th Doctor and Clara), Jason the Argonauts (3rd and Jo), and a couple more. The TARDIS Wiki describes the series in past tense, but it's not as dead as it appears. :)

You know what? Seeing that the series is not dead, I have an idea I should flesh out into a pitch for the series. Scratch that, I now have two.

The Ice Warriors would have slaughtered the "Martians" before they even got as far as sketching a walker. :)

He'd say "It doesn't exist!" and it all promptly vanishes. Might have been a cool way to do a sequel to "The Mind Robber".
