Yes, this is the first I've heard of "PU extensions"

There's not a lot of "actual science" in Star Trek as such. The instances where some scientific notion or another was referenced in the original series dated pretty quickly - such as an intragalactic phenomenon being referred to as "quasar-like."

"PU" wasn't familiar terminology, either, but it makes sense once I know what's being referred to.
