Michelle Yeoh Appreciation Thread

Wow. New forum smell!

The number one reason why I am looking forward to the Section 31 movie is because I will watch Michelle Yeoh in just about anything she chooses to appear in. She elevates just about anything that she's in.

I I first saw and was impressed by her in the James Bond flick, Tomorrow Never Dies, opposite Piers Brosnan.

And, of course the two very different versions of Philipa Georgiou on Star Trek Discovery and Star Trek Section 31.

I've never seen Crazy Rich Asians, but I will have to rectify that at some point. What are some of your favorite Michelle Yeoh performances?

Yeoh is a great actress, but even she didn't manage to make the character of mirror-Georgiou anyhow tolerable, imo.

So my expectations for Section 31 are very low, perhaps lower than ever before for any previously announced new Star Trek. But I hope the movie will be a pleasant surprise.

Indeed. Glad you got the first thread going. :)

I'm trying to remember where I first noticed Michelle Yeoh. My guess would be either Tomorrow Never Dies or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Loved her as Captain Georgiou in the Discovery pilot, but never really warmed to her Mirror Universe counterpart. Which is why I was very lukewarm when this series movie was announced. Right now, though, I’m just looking forward to new Trek and hopefully be surprised by Section 31. :)

I felt Yeoh managed to give Emperor Georgiou a little more depth and nuance than the one dimensional space Nazi that a large portion of the fandom has written her off as. She came from a society that was very very different from the prime universe and, frankly, did what she had to do to survive and what was considered normal and expected in that universe. In real world terms, a character like Garak is just as irredeemable as Emperor Georgiou, but DS9 still managed to give him an arc and a direction that allowed the audience to root for him.

For me this has zero to do with Michelle Yeoh or her acting abilities. I think she’s great and definitely has a great screen presence. But ultimately the writing just was never there to make Emperor Georgiou much more than a cardboard villain-turned-frinemey with edgy one-liners. I wish they would have been able to give her even half as much depth as they gave Garak.

I found her amazing in "Everything Everywhere All at Once". :)
Still haven’t managed to watch it, sadly. But definitely plan to. From all I’ve seen this should be right up my alley. :)

She was a bright spot in the first 3 seasons of STD for me and I absolutely lost any real interest after it jumped from the 23rd to 32nd century and she was written off the series.

You'd have thought they wrote her off BECAUSE they had everything needed for a Section 31 series, but yeah, that was not the case.

The Emperor had 2 good moments:
When she looks at the baby with real glee and joy, then as Tyler turns to look at her, she switches to annoyed-disgusted "ugh" face.
When she is sedated and the nurse tells her she needs her to count down from 10, and her response is: What you need is not impor...

Prime Georgiou was so much better.

I was introduced to her via "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" in 2000. I was 12 at the time. My mom, sister and I were all big fans of the movie.

She's great in "Discovery," but my biggest rewrite-fantasy is imagining her joining the "Star Trek" franchise 20 years earlier as the star of "Enterprise." The real "Enterprise" was such a slap in the face to my sister and I with its horny misogyny, and I frequently ponder how different it would have been for us had the show instead starred the lady from "Crouching Tiger." (And she didn't lose her shirt and bra sliding through a tunnel.)

Everything, Everywhere... is probably my favorite movie of the last couple decades, so that has to be way up there as one of her great performances. OP pretty much covered the rest -- although I didn't care for Crazy Rich Asians much. Maybe because it didn't have nearly enough Michelle Yeoh. :guffaw:

Michelle Yeah is, has been, and will continue to be, an actor of the highest quality. I have no doubt this will continue to be true in Section 31.

I do have doubts about the quality of the script and plot, however. My expectations are fairly low. My personal feeling on the movies are:

Excellent: TWoK, TVH, TUC, FC
VG: TMP, TSFS, Beyond
OK-Good: GEN, INS, ST09
Oof: TFF, NEM, STID

I think we will likely be in GEN/INS/09 territory with the tone being very ST09. Light, humorous, action-packed, but a lot of empty calories. Satisfying in a way but not all that great, either. JJ Abrams Trek.

Hope I am wrong sbout that. And I certainly will notcwrite the whole thing off because Mirror Georgiou was evil. That does not hurt my Trek fandom at all..

She brings her fists to a gun fight. It's all she needs.

This comment, reminiscent of Melinda May on Agents of SHIELD's attitude of, "If I need a gun, I'll take one", made me think about the alternate reality where Michelle Yeoh played Melinda May and Fenec Shand, and Ming Na Wen played Georgiou and Evelyn in "Everything, Everywhere...".

I've watched a ton of early Michelle Yeoh films recently, and my favorite one of works before Tomorrow Never Dies is a film called Stunt Woman. It's subbed, but it's about a stunt woman, Michelle Yeoh, it it's like for her character to do stunt work, and the gets into her personal life and the lives of the crew. I enjoyed it a lot.

If you just want a fun, crazy '80s action-comedy, then Yes, Madam is another one I recommend. That one's dubbed.

Do you plan to watch Shang-Chi? It's a Marvel movie, but it's less of a superhero movie and more of a martial arts fantasy. It takes place in that world, and there are a few nods to the larger world (most notably the character played by Sir Ben Kingsley) but it is largely a standalone picture. Michelle Yeoh plays an important supporting role in the second half of the movie.

I don't normally do comic book movies, though I feel like I have to in Guardians of the Galaxy's case, but I can add Shang-Chi to the list.

Well, I'm not going to tell you not to watch the Guardians of the Galaxy, but if you're going to do it for Michelle Yeoh, the clip I posted above from Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 is literally the entirety of her appearance as that character.
