Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

I noticed today that the print edition of the once-great Los Angeles Times has shrunk to tabloid size. Frankly, I'm surprised they still publish a print version at all. Does anyone these days still read the paper -- I mean, the paper paper?

I used to love reading the daily newspaper while drinking coffee

I saw that my local newspaper reported on Facebook about Trump's plan for mass deportation and most of the reactions were: they should do it here too. And I just don't understand it, but it is a sentiment in every European city otherwise the right was not so popular today.

But I especially don't understand those Americans whose ancestors came from Europe hence why I added this picture. I recently rewatched V for Vendetta again and it frightens me how much is similar it is to today, especially the scene where Evey reads Valerie's letter with the quote "I remember when different became dangerous". If in the future we're going to realise that voting for the far right was not the solution, and we're finally voting left again. I'm going to get a tattoo with the words: "being different is dangerous." And a infinity symbol with the colours of the lesbian flag

Me, trying to avoid spoilers, every time I go into TV&M and the Severance thread is there, taunting me with new posts:

In the 80s and 90s when known actors weren't getting the kind of roles they wanted but still needed to pay the bills, they'd make made-for-TV movies that would be forgotten as soon as it's over. Is that what made-for-Netflix movies have become? Only with better paychecks and even though they're pretty bad and quickly forgotten (unfortunately even the good movies on Netflix get forgotten after a couple days), they'll always be there for someone to stumble across.

Yes.

As well as magazines and books.

As an American with European roots my only objection comes from people coming here illegally. I'm a huge rule of law proponent and believe strongly in following the rules and in consequences.

I don't object to people being different or find them dangerous. I have no problem with legal immigration and at what time did research to leave the US and work overseas for a time and what rules I would have to follow in that country.

I don't sit there and go "get rid of them because they're different!" That's not even close to my attitude, or even the attitude of people I know in my local area more conservative than I. It's a matter of following the law.

It might sound insensitive but it's a bit black and white for me.

Legal immigration is an euphemism for only selecting the few foreign people which help the government to preserve capitalism.

It is inherently wrong, immigration can never be illegal, humans are allowed to find a better life for themselves and their families. There must never be an exception. Poverty is and always was a just reason for immigration.

If too many people cross over to your country it most likely means that your country was more successful in exploiting the country where these people came from. The industrial nations have been living on the backs of billions of people for way too long. We can’t demand cheap foreign labor on the one side and at the same time block people from having a fair shot within our economy.

Yes, industrial nations are affected by immigration, not always positively. But don’t fight for the deportations of those who already came. Fight for a more just global economy and less reasons for mass immigration. You cannot build a wall around your country forever. Not evening out global wealth will eventually lead to world wide chaos, death and war. Blaming immigrants for our own mistakes only postpones the inevitable.

The law is the law.

Change it if you so desire but the application of the law is part of an ordered society. Any more than I should just be able to go to New Zealand without respecting their laws. No, it was a process and one that I did not pass. I did not contribute to their society in a way that was needed.

I respect that.

My procedure to get rid of my kidney stone, well it's not actually in my kidney, it's just close to it, and biopsy my bladder is coming up on Wednesday and I'm pretty nervous about it. It's not really a serious procedure, they won't even cut me open, but you still hear horror stories about doctors screwing up a simple procedure or some unexpected reaction killing the patient.

I think again on starting up on a course my mother chose but hasn't started yet. It'll be good to learn some actual knowledge, even if there's the small fear that AI will overtake this aspect of business and make it moot. Ah well, better to learn something than nothing.

But you're at least aware of the hypocrisy of that statement, which @Fantasy Lover pointed out, right?

That's his first act as President?!
Rename the 'Gulf of Mexico', the 'Gulf of America'.
We're so screwed.

If only that was all he was doing.
