What is your personal head canon?

The Oberth class lower hull is modular and can be swapped for other types of pod based on mission profile. There are science pods (like the Grissom), cargo pods, troop/personnel transport pods, weapons pods, etc.

Access to these pods is not turbolifts through the struts because the struts are too small. Instead there are dedicated hard-wired site to site transporters that only operate between the saucer and pod.

I really wish they would have made that type of modification to the model when they used it in TNG, to make it less like what we saw in the movies, and more like what the specific episode it was featured in described it as. They could have just fabricated several pods and installed them over the original. But I guess that was beyond the budget.

I hope the wiring is extra hard and not the usual shoddy Starfleet job. ;)

You mean like this =D

A modular Oberth would closely resemble how a lot of Starfleet tugs and tanker ships look but be a lot more practical than what we've actually seen onscreen since 1984.

I've always been rather fond of the Ptolemy-class tugs from the Franz Joseph manual. I wish his estate would let them be used onscreen.

In fact I thought those tugs towing the Enterprise in DSC were of that class, but I guess they're not. :sigh:

After the timewar, Section 31 is tasked with preserving the Federation, from foundation through to coming out of the timewar / burn on the right side - in the 31st century.
i wonder if section 31 manipulated both the creation of the spore drive and the scenario that sends Discovery to the future? What if Control was actually under control, and all part of a giant gambit to create, then remove Discovery from the timeline? What if the entire show, even Lorca, was all the machinations of Section 31 to preserve or create a future, after the events of First Contact destroyed the entire timeline and utopian Federation?

Section 31 intentionally coming up with a plan that gets them all killed and all organic life in the galaxy eradicated sounds very on-brand for them.
i'm saying none of that was true, it was all optics to get discovery and the spore drive into the future. them being "destroyed" was them going into hiding. that they manipulate things in the background from ENT thru DSCS02 to preserve the federation and its future. just randomly speculating based on my own previously posted headcanon, going further down that tangent.

but, what you said is absolutely hilarious for the standard section 31. i'm repurposing them and their branding as the protectors of the 31st century.

or they screw up nothing, and it was all part of manipulating the events of the time war for an outcome in their favor, and that failings are all part of the 5D plan.

after first contact, the federation shouldn't have been formed, because of butterflies and changes to the timeline; the NX was supposed to be destroyed. the timewar repurposed them and they were nudged into timeline spanning events like ensuring the foundation of the Federation. section 31 is guiding the timeline from that point of the timewar, to out the other end, saving it again post-burn with Discovery. future guy, daniels/kovich, and all section 31 actions in the interim are for this purpose.
