New Scotty

Horribly miscast. Sulu and Chekov to a lesser extent also.

Kirk and Uhura were bearable but Quinto Spock was pretty good and Urban Bones absolutely outstanding.

I would have preferred Paul McGillion.
Pegg's Scotty Yo-Yos on his ethics and is a bit too slapstick for my tastes. He treated Keenser very disrespectfully while they were on duty, albeit the little guy was very loyal.

Maybe, but that’s on the script, not the actor.

Dude said no most of the time.

Reminded me of Hawkeye and Trapper.

Nope.

Pegg gets the essence of Scotty, who was most often a comic relief sort of character, and he brings some nuance back to it that was lacking in most of Doohan's later appearances.

I like the SNW version as well.

do we know enough about the SNW version to be able to even say that yet?

My favorite Scottys are the Doohans. Lol.

No disrespect to Mr Doohan, but if I were creating the Scotty character today, Pegg's interpretation would be what I would do. Didn't bother me at all. I really like the Pegg version of the character.

It bothers me that Doohan did a Doric accent and Pegg does a Glaswegian one. They're opposite sides of the country and each area has a different feel. Their personalities suit their accents but they are two different characters.

I think James McAvoy wanted to do something more akin to Doohan until he read the script and then passed, telling JJ he should hire Pegg instead.

If he weren't the wrong age now, I'd like to see Chris Doohan step into the part like he did for Continrues. So like his dad it's scary...
He would have to learn to dial it down from "hysterical third season Day of the Dove" Scotty though. Chris Doohan played the character pretty one note. He got it better than any of the other fan actors, but I also blame the directors of the episodes for not controlling it and the writers for having Scotty run off at the mouth a bit more than normal. This went all the way back to New Voyages for me. "All right beastie! Time to ring the dinner bell! Come and get it!" Jesus Christ Scotty, shaddap!

Jimmy Doohan is tough to replace. I mean, they all are, but I find it harder to accept some of the new actors in the role than others. He's one of them.
