Spoilers What other "special episodes" do you want to see on SNW?

Magic To Make The Sanest Man Go Mad was probably the best episode of DIS season one. It was introduced late in the process of scripting the season because it was pointed out that going to the Mirror Universe before we know the prime characters very well was a bad idea. It's just a fun little bottle episode.

The episode where they explore a strange new world and meet fresh, new aliens with a cultural or some other kind of twist that puts the ship and crew in peril, requiring them to work together to achieve a satisfactory conclusion.

One not focused on any particular character, their arc, angst, relationships, or growth. Something that leaves me in awe of the wonders of space and infinite diversity in infinite combinations.

Yanno, some of that exploration shit.
So, SNW or TOS. Same thing.

I would love to see another crossover episode. The recent release with Kirk and Spock from OTOY has got me thinking about all sorts of possibilities, and it was a thread about a possible Enterprise animated series that got me thinking about this.

I would love to finally get some concrete facts about the Romulan War. Barring the approval of a TV movie ala Section 31, SNW seems to be the most likely place to get that. So, a crossover with Enterprise, with the season 5 refit, using OTOY tech to allow the original actors to play their characters presented at the same age they were 20 years ago, with a minimum of post-production cost.

A fanciful idea? Sure. But, why not?

For those of you unfamiliar with OTOY and their groundbreaking real-time digital mask technology, I present to you this footage of Robin Curtis shot earlier this year with the OTOY tech, shot completely in real time without any post-production work.

Love instructor sounds creepy to me.

Oh, I totally agree. It was part of Gene Roddenberry’s pitch for what became The Motion Picture. And I believe it even made it into the novelization

It's really not at all a pivitol a moment in the novel. I'm sure it was not in any of the screenplays (although plenty of weird Gene stuff is).

It is referred to in Kirk's foreword to the novel where he explains his name. (Sorry, JJ, his grandpa's name is not Tiberius.) "I received James because it was both the name of my father’s beloved brother as well as that of my mother’s first love instructor."

(I never realized that SAM is named after his grandfather.)

OK, we all love to bag on Gene's obsession with... To just say "sex" doesn't seem to do the man's demons justice. I mean TWICE in his Motion Picture Novel he has Kirk having to deal with the unwanted excitement of the Kirk Unit in front of his crew. (Both times because of Ilia's pheromones.) Wait. No, there's another moment when he sees the hologram of Lori, his lover and we get to hear about his physical reaction. Good grief, Gene was almost SIXTY! Grow up a bit, sir.

Anyway, it's actually a decently sci-fi "advancement of the species" kind of idea that humans would become comfortable enough with sex that it would be actually taught like you teach driving or manners. Maybe I'm reading too much into it since he calls it a "love instructor" rather than simply sex ed and the implication is that Kirk's mom had an emotional attachment. It also sounds like a really Roddenberry idea. The fact that it would be totally understandable to name a child after someone in this role normalizes it even further. Very Gene.

Your mileage may vary on if you might think this is a good or an ill. Suffice it to say that we're clearly not even close to that point yet even if one accepts it as a good idea. I don't but then I don't believe in Roddenberry's perfectible humanity either.

(Happy 45th birthday, TMP!)

Thanks for the clarification. I don’t know why I thought it made it to the screenplay.

I wasn't even aware it was a joking matter, considering that observant Trek fans have noted that, while it wasn't proven and likely never will be one way or another now, the description of the position and personal history of Grace Lee Whitney's rapist seems to match Roddenberry.

Kirk's middle name being "Tiberius" was established all the way back in the animated series. The animated series is (currently considered to be) canon, while novelizations are not.

Someone on another thread pointed out to me that Tiberius is also the middle name of another Roddenberry protagonist on The Lieutenant. So either a Roddenberry thing all along or Gerrold was riffing on the GR connection and then GR went along with it.
