Could the Dominion War have been avoided?

I have mixed thoughts initially but end up with one conclusion by the end.

  • If the Dominion didn't want the New Bajor Colony in the Gamma Quadrant, they should've said so before it was established.

  • On the other hand, once the Dominion laid claim to that area of space, I don't think Sisko should've taken the Defiant though the Wormhole in the next episode in violation of that claim.

  • After the Defiant crew were let go, that should've been the end of it. But then the Dominion not only infiltrated the Federation but destabilized the balance of power in the Alpha Quadrant.

Once that third part happened, I think the Dominion War was justified. I don't think there was any way around it. Without the war, the Federation either would've become subservient to the Dominion, part of the Dominion, or surrounded by the Dominion. None of those would've been good.

It has happened. But if he's ending the series he could end it without a cliffhanger.

I suppose my real question is why Berman would want to cancel the show rather than continuing and eventually showing the war. What is it about the war that was so bad that the show would have to be canceled over it? Doesn’t quite make sense.

The Jem'Hadar are a big part of what makes the Dominion so appalling. They are literally engineered, created, and born not just to kill, but to regard most other species as inferior and worthy only of subjugation. They're the KKK, but with battle armor instead of white nightgowns.

Not quite. The KKK are at heart a bunch of spineless buffoons who hide behind masks because they’re too chickenshit to show their faces. That’s not even remotely the same thing as the Jem’Hadar.

That's true. The black codes established by the Klan were the precursors to gun control laws in the US. Seems they didn't like it when that uppity black man they wanted to lynch declined the honor with a 12 gauge.

However, their prejudice and contempt are similar. And unlike the Klan, who were taught to hate from childhood, the Jem'Hadar have it hard-wired.

Well, in the end the Changelings are responsible for the Dominion War, they are the evil force behind everything. If they all would have been like Odo the war could have been avoided.
