The New, Improved Alternative Factor

Too bad that lil' ship prop/set piece just kinda "vanished" after this episode (except for the dome that was used in "Gamesters of Triskelion"). With a bit of redressing, it could have made a nifty wee inspection pod, like a TOS era "work bee" or something.

(K-7 station by Metlesits, Lazarus pod by Ptrope, crewman figure by DAZ, composition by me using Poser)
And a travel pod is all it should have been.

The Atavachron on the other hand…or the Guardian…

Had this been a two parter with All Our Yesterdays (or a three-parter with City on the Edge of Forever)—then I could a multi-show arc with Laz’ misusing the technology…there was a Pertwee era Doctor Who where there was travel sideways in time…a mirror universe type tale.

We’re I to tie these three stories together, Lazarus had access to the Atavachron and (of course) had an accident…after everyone had left the planet.

The Atavachron would just be the top of a machine similar in scope to the Krell machine, and Lazarus just needed crystals for that.

The alternate Lazarus holds his cohort at bay as Kirk brings the crystals back up in time to escape the nova.

That little flying saucer is replaced with a powerful machine—more believable to me.

That's one of the better moments! Nice robust unhinged manic acting and trying to sell the fear of the threat. That's one huge thing in TOS's favor: Even the arguably bad episodes had the actors doing their all and playing it with sincerity.

If TOS lasted 3 years in this universe, then in the mirror universe it would have lasted longer than Gunsmoke.

In the same universe, Gilligan's Island would have had a 4th year as well. Probably a 5th as well.

Those poor people. :(

Looks like fun! :D

Now for a 90s show that took some basic themes of "Gilligan's Island" but turned the idea of "stranded due to shipwreck" into "survivors of nuclear annihilation", look up 'Woops!". It's just as ludicrous, which is the intent as "Gilligan's" is ludicrous as well, but it's just about as fun and in its own ways. Both shows need a suspension of disbelief and to roll with it, of course... /digression

Why were they getting rid of Ginger in Season 4?

Tina Louise did NOT like working on the show. In every "reunion" or update of the concept, she refused to return, so other actors filled the role of Ginger Grant. Dawn Welles voiced her for one of the Filmation cartoon adaptations. Maybe her contract was for 3 years (I really don't know), so if the series had returned for a 4th season, a story was prepared to rescue Ginger so Louise could bail.
